The Chicago White Sox will head on the road to Comerica Park on Monday evening for the opening game of their American League Central showdown against the Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers come into play on Sunday just four games below the .500-mark with a 75-79 overall record. Meanwhile, Chicago has already clinched the AL Central race with an 87-68 overall mark.

Can the Tigers open the week with a win at home over the division-rival White Sox on Monday night?

Keuchel looking to finish the season strong vs. Detroit

Chicago is scheduled to hand the ball to left-handed veteran Dallas Keuchel in Detroit on Monday. The 33-year-old enters Comerica Park with an 8-9 overall record to go along with a 5.18 ERA in 30 games (29 starts) but he’s flashed signs of a turnaround following a rough stretch. After allowing at least five earned runs in four straight appearances, Keuchel has given up just four combined runs over his last two starts. Last time out, he surrendered just two runs in five innings of work in a no-decision versus the Detroit Tigers.

Keuchel comes in striking out just 5.30 batters and walking 3.22 batters per nine innings of work this season. Both of those marks are the worst numbers that he’s posted since his rookie season way back in 2012. The southpaw has also struggled with the long ball this year, allowing 1.38 HR/9.

This will be Keuchel’s second consecutive start against the Tigers and fourth time seeing them this season. The White Sox veteran is 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in those matchups and owns a career 4-4 record and 4.52 ERA in 12 games (11 starts) against Detroit all-time. According to Baseball Savant, the current Tigers roster is hitting a healthy .324 in 123 plate appearances off of the White Sox lefty heading into Monday’s matchup.

Manning seeks first career win vs. White Sox

The Tigers will open the series with right-handed rookie Matt Manning on Monday evening. The 23-year-old comes in with a 4-6 overall record to go along with a 5.73 ERA in 16 games. Manning has battled through some rough outings, including an eight-run drubbing at the hands of the Oakland A’s at the beginning of the month. However, he’s pitched well, for the most part, this season and has allowed three earned runs or fewer in each of his last three starts. In his previous trip to the mound, the Tigers’ right-hander allowed three runs on four hits in five innings of work in a no-decision versus the White Sox.

One of the top prospects in the Tigers’ minor league system, Manning made his MLB debut earlier than expected this season and found a way to stick around in the starting rotation. However, his strikeout numbers from the minor leagues haven’t quite translated over to MLB level just yet. Through 77 frames, he has struck out just 5.49 batters per nine innings of work, a far cry from the 10.02 K/9 that he posted in seven Triple-A starts prior to being called up.

Manning has seen the White Sox twice already this season but comes into this game in search of his first career win against the AL Central division rivals. He is 0-0 with a 5.87 ERA in a combined 7 ⅔ frames against Chicago this year. Per Baseball Savant, current White Sox batters are hitting .364 in 39 plate appearances off of the Tigers’ rookie coming into Monday’s start.

Manning has struggled at times this season but the Tigers’ right-hander has out-pitched his overall numbers in 2021. As a rookie, Manning has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 12 of his 16 starts and he’s shown no signs of slowing down late in the season. Meanwhile, Keuchel has had some ups-and-downs of late as well and will be facing the Tigers for the second consecutive time, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him get knocked around in this spot. Take Detroit to open this series with a win at home in Comerica Park on Monday night.

This has the makings of a high-scoring affair.  Detroit has scored at least five runs in two of its last three games. Meanwhile, Keuchel has given up five earned runs or more in four of his previous six appearances and will be facing the Tigers for the second consecutive start. Meanwhile, Manning owns a 5.76 ERA in two starts against the White Sox this season and has posted a 6.62 ERA in four starts this month. Take this game to go over the projected total at Comerica ark on Monday night.
