Texas Rangers at Oakland Athletics
When and Where: Sunday, Sept. 9, Oakland County Coliseum, Calif., 4:05 p.m. EDT.
Trevor Cahill looks to extend his dominant run at home, where he seeks a fifth consecutive winning start Sunday as the Oakland Athletics complete a three-game series versus the Texas Rangers.
Rangers to use combo of opener Springs and rookie Jurado
Rangers manager Kevin Banister is going to use the rookie tandem of opener Jeffrey Springs (1-0, 2.29 ERA) followed by Ariel Jurado (2-4, 6.00 ERA) in this series finale after it was highly effective in their last outing.
Jurado won his first two starts after being recalled in late July but failed to continue that form in the ensuing four starts, getting drilled for 19 runs and 31 hits over 19 1-3 innings while losing three of them.
Making his first major league start after 10 relief appearances, Springs tossed two shutout innings to open Monday’s game against the Texas Rangers, and Jurado followed with four scoreless frames of his own, scattering two hits and one walk. Neither factored in the decision in Texas’ 3-1 loss, but Banister was pleased with their work.
“Obviously, you look at the six zeros, and you look at how those two kids threw extremely well,” Banister told the club’s official website. “You go into that game and you look at those two pitchers and you look up and you say, ‘Well, if you could have scripted out and put six zeros on the board to get you to the seventh, that’s about as best as you can ask for.”
One of Jurado’s losses during his slump came at Oakland on Aug. 21 when he was tagged for four runs and 10 hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 6-0 setback. It is his only career outing versus the Athletics.
Cahill looks to continue winning ways at home
Cahill (6-3, 3.60 ERA) ran his home winning streak to four starts Monday against the New York Yankees, but it was a sub-par outing there by his standards.
The right-hander was reached for three runs and four hits in five innings of Oakland’s 6-3 win — Cahill had entered the game conceding just five runs in 52 2-3 innings over his previous eight starts at home on the season. Even with that outing, he still has a sparkling 1.09 ERA at home while holding opposing hitters to a .164 batting average.
This is Cahill’s third start against Texas this year but his first one at home. He labored to a win in the most recent outing July 26, giving up five runs and seven hits as Oakland hung on for a 7-6 victory. The win improved his lifetime mark against the Rangers to 11-4 with a 3.07 ERA in 19 starts.
Rangers veteran Adrian Beltre has fared well against Cahill, going 13 for 35 with a pair of homers and four doubles. Beltre, who homered twice in Saturday night’s 8-6 loss, has 3,152 hits, is tied for 16th all-time with Paul Waner and three hits shy of passing George Brett for 15th.
The Athletics are:
- 5-0 in Cahill’s last five home starts.
- 4-1 in Cahill’s last five starts vs. AL West teams.
- 8-3 in Cahill’s last 11 starts vs. sub-.500 teams.
- The under is 4-0 in Cahill’s last four home starts vs. sub-.500 teams.
- The under is 26-10-5 in Cahill’s last 41 home starts.
The Rangers are:
- 18-37 in their last 55 Sunday games.
- 0-4 in their last four games vs. Cahill.
- 2-5 in their last seven road games vs. Cahill.
- The under is 8-3-1 in their last 12 road games vs. the Athletics.
- The under is 7-3 in their last 10 games when allowing five or more runs in the previous game.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
Cahill has had everyone’s number at home this season, and he has had the Rangers’ number of late regardless of venue. Look for those trends to continue as the Athletics take another step closer to nailing down a wild-card spot.
Prediction: Pick: Athletics -225
Full-Game Total Pick
A large part of this is expecting Cahill to continue his dominance at home, but this is also a small leap of faith in the tandem of Springs and Jurado putting together another effective effort after doing so Monday.
Prediction: Pick: UNDER 9 runs (-115)
Full-Game Prop Bet
The Athletics have won each of Cahill’s last four starts at home by three or more runs, and have staked him to first-inning leads in three of them. Expect that trend to continue, which allows Cahill to essentially pitch downhill and rack up outs.
Prediction: Pick: Athletics -2.5 Adjusted Run Line (+135)
First Five Innings Side Pick
The Athletics have not trailed after five innings in any of Cahill’s nine starts at home and have led after seven. The Rangers have led after five innings only once in their last five contests, and Cahill’s home form is just too good to pass up.
Prediction: Pick: Athletics -0.5 runs (-165)
First Five Innings Total Bet
This has much to do with Cahill’s dominance at home since teams have come in under five runs after five innings in six of his nine outings in Oakland. Another effective outing by Springs and Jurado would help make the under an easy hit here.
Prediction: Pick: UNDER 5 runs (-120)
First Five Innings Prop Prediction
This is staying consistent with the belief Cahill will tear through the Rangers, and the Athletics will find enough runs against Springs and Jurado.
Prediction: Pick: Athletics 3-way winner through 5 innings (-155)
