The St. Louis Cardinals (81-56, 78-59 RL, 65-67-5 O/U) battle with the Pittsburgh Pirates (50-86, 66-70 RL, 59-66-11 O/U) as the NL Central foes begin a three-game series on Friday night. The Cardinals will give the nod to Miles Mikolas. The Pirates send Roansy Contreras to the mound. The Cardinals lead the season series 8-2.

Mikolas Starts, Cards Shine on Road

The Cardinals will have Miles Mikolas take the mound for the 29th time of the season. Mikolas was nearly flawless in his latest outing, tossing eight shutout innings against the Cubs and earned the win to lift his record to 11-10. The veteran right-hander had a shaky month of August but has good numbers, recording a 3.32 ERA and a 1.01 WHIP in 176.1 innings of action. Mikolas has limited the Pirates to three runs (two earned) in 12.1 innings this season and is 5-4 with a sharp 2.83 ERA in 92.1 career innings against the foes.

The Cardinals have been almost just as good on the road where they have won three consecutive series including a triumph in Atlanta. They won two of four against the Nationals this week and feature a huge eight-game lead ahead of the Brewers.

Tommy Edman continues to produce, accumulating six RBIs in his last six games. The 27-year-old second baseman is having a career year, bashing 13 homers with 53 RBIs and a .730 OPS. Edman has five RBIs accompanied by a dazzling 1 OPS against the Pirates this season.

The Cardinals are scoring an average of 4.90 runs, placing them third overall. The pitching staff has posted a 3.77 team ERA, good for ninth in the big leagues.

Contreras Shines, Pirates Continue Homestand

The Pirates will have Roansy Contreras on the mound on Friday. Contreras was stellar in his latest effort, limiting the Blue Jays to one run in six innings, but received no help from the offense and finished with a no-decision. The rookie right-hander has been outstanding in three consecutive performances and features a 3.41 ERA and a 1.31 WHIP in 74 innings. He has squandered six runs (five earned) in six innings against the Cardinals this season.

The Pirates continue to have issues at the plate. They only scored four runs in three games against the Blue Jays followed by nine runs in three bouts against the Mets. They beat the Mets 8-2 in the open but lost the series. The Pirates are a poor 2-8 in their last ten clashes.

Bryan Reynolds is currently in a slump at the plate similar to most Pirates, amassing only one RBI in his last ten games. The 27-year-old center fielder has decent stats, bashing 21 homers with 49 RBIs and a .781 OPS. Reynolds has a stellar .943 OPS against the Cardinals this season.

The Pirates are scoring an average of 3.51 runs, landing them 28th overall. The pitching staff has fielded a 4.67 team ERA, pegging them 26th in the Major Leagues.

Best Bets for this Game

Insiders Status:

Rating:

The Cardinals are playing well and continue to dominate, winning nine of their last 13 games. The Pirates have only won one out of their last seven games overall and have been just as bad at home, dropping nine of their last ten home games as the bats continue to struggle.

Furthermore, Miles Mikolas has silenced the Pirates' offense this season, limiting them to only three runs in 12.1 innings. He just tossed eight shutout innings against the Cubs earlier this week. Pirates’ starter Roansy Contreras is a solid young pitcher but has not been able to contain the Cardinals' allowing eight runs in seven innings against the rivals this season.

Prediction: St. Louis Cardinals -1.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I expect a pitcher's duel. Mikolas features a stifling 2.83 career ERA against the Pirates and they continue to slump in a big way at the dish, scoring three or fewer runs in six out of their last seven games.

In addition, while I expect enough offense from the Cards to get the win, Contreras is pitching well. He held the Blue Jays to one run last time out and has only conceded three runs in his last 18 innings of work. The under is also a convincing 6-2 in the Pirates’ last eight games.

Prediction: Under 8
