Philadelphia 76ers (12-25 SU, 21-16 ATS, 16-20-1 O/U) vs. Washington Wizards (19-19 SU, 19-19 ATS, 24-14 O/U)

NBA: Saturday, January 14, 2017, Verizon Center, Washington, D.C., 8 pm ET

Line: Washington -9.5; Over/Under: 207.5

It’s a matchup of Eastern Conference foes hoping to pick up a win and move upward in the standings in the nation’s capital. The suddenly hot Philadelphia 76ers are on the road as they travel to face the Washington Wizards Saturday night. Philadelphia won their third straight and fifth in the last six games with a 102-93 home win over the Hornets Friday night. Washington fell back to the .500 mark with a 117-108 road loss to the Celtics Wednesday night. Philadelphia owns a solid 176-118 edge in the all-time regular season series between the teams. Their 109-102 home win on November 16, 2016 in the first meeting this season snapped Washington’s six game win streak in the series.

Philadelphia 76ers Looking for Sixth Win in Seven Games

Philadelphia has put together a torrid stretch for them, especially given the way they’ve played in recent years. The 76ers have won three in a row for the first time in what seems like forever and five of their last six games. Philadelphia’s last win streak of at least three games was a four game run from December 29, 2013 to January 4, 2014. The 76ers led by five after the opening quarter and seven at the half before holding Charlotte at arm’s length in the second half. Philadelphia shot 47.4 percent from the field and knocked in 14 of 36 three point attempts in the game. Joel Embiid led the 76ers with 24 points and eight rebounds in the victory.

The 76ers are miserable on the offensive end of the floor. The team is 26th in the league in scoring offense with 99.2 points per game. Philadelphia is 19th in rebounding with 43.2 boards a night and 12th with 22.6 assists per contest. The 76ers are below average on the defensive end, ranking 21st by allowing 105.6 points a game. Joel Embiid leads the 76ers in scoring with 19.4 points plus 7.5 rebounds a game. Ersan Ilyasova contributes 15.1 points and 6.3 rebounds since coming over in a deal from the Thunder. Jahlil Okafor (10.7 points, 4.8 rebounds) and Dario Saric are a couple of the other guys the 76ers are trying to rely on offensively. Gerald Henderson, Nik Stauskas, Robert Covington (10.3 points, 5.8 rebounds), T.J. McConnell and Sergei Rodriguez all are key pieces in the rotation. Philadelphia hopes to have #1 overall pick Ben Simmons back in the near future as he has managed to practice in 5 on 0 drills this week. The 76ers are tied for28th in the league shooting the ball as they hit 43.2 percent from the floor. Philadelphia is tied for 7th in threes per game with 10.4 triples a night and 21st in three point shooting as they hit 34.9 percent from beyond the arc.

Washington Wizards Hope for Success in Return Home

Washington saw its road struggles continue as they were unable to put together a strong enough performance to beat Boston. The Wizards fell to 4-13 on the road this season with the defeat compared to their 15-6 home mark. Washington led by four at the half and by two after three quarters but playing the second game of a back to back drained their tank. Boston outscored the Wizards 34-23 in the final 12 minutes to pull away for the win. The Wizards shot 42.9 percent from the field and 10 of 26 from three point range. Washington allowed Boston to hit 50.6 percent from the field and 17 of 41 from long range. Bradley Beal had 35 points to lead the Wizards in the loss.

The Wizards are 14th in the league in scoring offense with 105.4 points per game. Washington is 27th in the league on the glass with 41.9 boards per game. The Wizards stand 9th with 23.1 assists per game. Washington is 22nd in the league as they allow 106.1 points per game on the year. John Wall leads the team with 22.8 points, 10.3 assists and 2.25 steals per game. Bradley Beal averages 22.5 points a game while Otto Porter Jr. (14.2 points, 6.5 boards) is developing into what the Wizards hoped for when they drafted him.  Markieff Morris (13.2 points, six rebounds) and Marcin Gortat (11.5 points, 11.8 rebounds) are other Washington players scoring in double figures. Marcus Thornton, Andrew Nicholson, Trey Burke and Kelly Oubre Jr. are looked at to contribute off the pine. Washington is 4th in field goal percentage as the team shoots a collective 47.1 percent from the floor. The Wizards are 26th in the league with 8.3 triples a night while ranking 14th in three point shooting. Washington hits 36 percent from downtown.

Washington

  • Wizards are 9-1 ATS in their last 10 home games
  • Wizards are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 home games vs. a team with a losing road record

Philadelphia has played really well of late but there are a couple things working against them in this one. For starters, the 76ers are playing the second game of a back to back against a Washington team that had the last two days off. On top of that, the 76ers are on the road, where they are just 4-11 on the year. Finally, the Wizards are a good home team, posting a 15-6 mark at the Verizon Center. It’s a lot to ask a young team like Philadelphia to pull that off. The 76ers have some light in the tunnel for the first time in a long time but it’s too much to expect them to pull the win out here. Washington stops the 76ers’ run with a tight win here.

Pick: Washington Wizards

The 76ers have quietly put together the best defensive numbers in the Eastern Conference since the beginning of December. Those numbers have helped them win five games in their last six after starting the year 7-24. Washington has a good offensive attack that is driven by Wall and Beal in the backcourt. The question is whether the Wizards can exploit the 76ers’ weaknesses to get points on the board and pick up the victory.

The under has gone 12-4-1 in Philadelphia’s last 17 games overall. Washington has seen the under go 5-2 in their last seven at home against teams with a road winning percentage below .400 on the year. Based on Philadelphia’s recent focus on the defensive end, one has to lean toward the under, especially with the 76ers playing the second game of a back to back here.
