We have a non-conference NBA matchup to consider for Wednesday evening when the Dallas Mavericks meet the Charlotte Hornets for the second time this season. The Mavericks lost the first meeting in Dallas by a score of 118-99 and enter this contest riding a three-game winning streak. Charlotte enters this matchup looking to extend a four-game winning streak when they host the Mavericks.

Mavericks Three Game Winning Streak

Dallas enters this game riding a three-game winning streak and missed last night's scheduled matchup with New Orleans due to Covid-19 issues as Josh Richardson, Dorian Finney-Smith, Jalen Brunson, and Maxi Kleber were all held out thanks to protocol issues and their status for Wednesday is unclear. Kristaps Porzingis is set to return for this game and that will be a welcome addition to a 5-4 Mavericks team without him. Luka Doncic leads the Mavs in several categories including points per game (26.6), rebounds (9.1), and assists (8.1) this season.

Tim Hardaway Jr lit up the gym Saturday night with 36 points and five rebounds to lead the Mavericks past the Orlando Magic by a score of 112-98. Doncic chipped in with 20 points alongside ten caroms and assists while Trey Burke came off of the bench and scored 29 points to lead Dallas to its third consecutive victory.

The Mavericks pace of play is twenty-fourth in the league and score an average of 110 points while allowing an average of 105.7 points per game. Dallas ranks thirteenth in true shooting percentage and twenty-seventh in offensive rebound percentage this season.

Hornets Four Game Winning Streak

Charlotte got off to a slow start but has won four straight ballgames and seems to be headed in the right direction. Gordon Hayward hasn’t missed a game yet this season and leads the team in scoring, averaging 22.5 points per game while LaMelo Ball is averaging 12.4 points with a team-high seven caroms along with six dimes and coming off his first career triple-double. Devonte’ Graham leads the team with 6.5 assists per contest while Terry Rozier averages 19.5 points per game this season.

Hayward led the way on Monday night against the New York Knicks, scoring 34 points with three rebounds and assists in the Hornets 109-88 home win over the Knicks. Graham chipped in with 19 points and a team-high seven dimes while Ball came off of the bench to score eight points and led the side with 14 caroms in the big win over New York.

Charlotte plays a pace that ranks nineteenth in the NBA this season and scores an average of 108.5 points while allowing an average of 107.5 points per contest. Charlotte is twenty-first in true shooting percentage and eighteenth in offensive rebounding percentage this season.

This game isn’t on the board yet but you will want to be sure the Mavericks can field a team before putting money down on this one. Both sides are playing great and while the return of Porzingis might give Dallas a lift it likely won’t help Dallas win this game. Charlotte has a healthy and hot Hayward plus Ball coming off of the bench and the Mavericks will have a tough time dealing with either of them plus Graham and Rozier getting it done. Dallas is a better shooting team but the Hornets defense is beginning to show up and has held teams below 107.5 points in three of their last five games. I will take Charlotte in this one.

Prediction: Hornets +4.,5

We’re looking at two teams who play decent team defense while playing a below-average pace of play and that usually leads to lower scores. Both teams are lousy on the offensive glass and we won’t see that many putbacks on Wednesday. Both sides are top 15 in made triples but these sides are also top five in three-point percentage allowed. I will take the UNDER in this contest.
