Dallas Mavericks (22-19) vs. Memphis Grizzlies (29-14)

The Dallas Mavericks couldn’t extend their winning streak to seven games as they lost to the New York Knicks on the road. They will try to conclude their road trip with a win before they spend the next five games at home. The Memphis Grizzlies are going through their best period of the season as they are on a ten-game winning run. Memphis will play the second of back-to-back games when they take on the Dallas Mavericks after facing the Minnesota Timberwolves on Thursday.

The Southwest Division rivals have met on two occasions this season, and each time, the visiting team secured a victory. Dallas was better in six of the previous ten H2H encounters. This game will tip-off at 10 PM ET on Friday, January 14.

Dallas’ weak offense couldn’t cope with the Knicks’ sturdy defense

The Dallas Mavericks displayed one of the weakest offensive performances of the season in a 108-85 road loss to the New York Knicks. The Mavs failed to score more than 24 points in any quarter and shot just 41.0% from the floor. Dallas was inferior in rebounds (39-54) and assists (16-24), and the Knicks deservedly secured a big win. The Mavericks didn’t cover a -2.5 spread, which is the first time in five games they failed to cover. Right now, Dallas has a 21-20 ATS record.

Luka Doncic (21 PTS, 11 REB, 5 AST, and 2 REB), Jalen Brunson (14 PTS, 7 REB, and 6 AST), and Tim Hardaway (13 PTS) led the Mavs in the loss.

Kristaps Porzingis (quarantine) and Willie Cauley-Stein (personal) are out and will not help Dallas on Friday.

The Mavericks have the 25th offense in the NBA that is scoring 105.3 points per game, while their defense is 3rd in the league as it allows 103.4 points to the rivals.

Not even Golden State could stop Memphis

The Memphis Grizzlies are currently the hottest team in the NBA as they won each of the previous ten games, including the most recent one over the Golden State Warriors 116-108 at home. It was an impressive display from the Grizzlies, who outscored the Warriors by 11 points in the final 12 minutes. The Grizzlies played very well on defense and forced 17 turnovers, committing only 11 on the other end. Memphis covered a +2.5 spread, which is the seventh consecutive time the Grizzlies managed to cover. They improved to a 28-15 ATS record.

Ja Morant (29 PTS, 8 AST, 5 REB, and 2 BLK), Tyus Jones (17 PTS, 8 AST, and 6 REB), Ziaire Williams (17 PTS), and Brandon Clarke (14 PTS, 9 REB, and 2 BLK) led the Grizzlies to the win. Jaren Jackson recorded a double-double of 13 points, game-high 11 rebounds, along with game-high three blocks and two steals.

Dillon Brooks (ankle) is out indefinitely, while Steven Adams (quarantine) is questionable to face the Mavs on Friday.

The Grizzlies have the 3rd offense in the NBA that is scoring 112.1 points per game, while their defense is 15th in the league as it allows 107.8 points to the rivals.

Even though they are playing the second of back-to-back games, I am going with the Grizzlies, who are looking unstoppable at the moment. Dallas displayed a pale performance in New York against the Knicks and will be motivated to bounce back against the divisional rivals, but I don’t think they can make an upset. It’s going to be interesting to see a mouthwatering matchup between Doncic and Morant, and on this occasion, I am going with a young Memphis team to prevail.

It’s going to be a close one, though, and don’t be shocked if the Mavericks get a win. Still, I am going with the Grizzlies, who have been the best rebounding team in the NBA so far, although they will likely be without Steven Adams in this one. Their recent defense reminds me of an original Grind City from a few years ago, and I am backing that D to get an edge on Friday.

Prediction: Take the Grizzlies at -3 (-110)

The aforementioned improved defense is exactly what helped the Grizzlies extend the winning run to ten games, especially at home, where they limited the rivals to under 110 points in each of the previous 12 games. Dallas has been in a hot and cold form when it comes to offense recently, while the Mavs have been the second-worst team in the NBA in pace. Both teams are among the top 10 in defensive rating, so I don’t see how this one is going to turn into a high-scoring affair. Expect to see a lot of strong defensive possessions, particularly late in the game. Also, don’t be surprised if one of the rivals ends the clash in double digits.

Prediction: Go with Under 217.5 (-110)
