It’s a battle of Western Conference teams looking to make a move in the standings down in the Lone Star State. The LA Clippers are on the road as they travel to face the Dallas Mavericks Tuesday night. LA snapped a five-game losing skid as they took down the Spurs 103-95 Sunday night on the road. Dallas was beaten 116-106 on the road by the Bucks Monday afternoon in their previous contest. The Mavericks own a 92-62 advantage in the all-time regular season series. This season, the teams split two meetings with the Clippers taking a 125-121 home win in the most recent matchup on December 20, 2018.

LA Clippers Seek Back to Back Wins

LA had nearly played themselves out of the current playoff picture before bouncing back with a win over San Antonio Sunday night. The Clippers entered Monday’s action holding the final playoff spot in the Western Conference by a half-game over the Lakers. LA led by 12 after the opening quarter and held the lead the rest of the way. The Clippers didn’t let the Spurs get closer than three over the final three quarters. LA shot 45.9 percent from the field, including 11 of 21 from three-point range, and overcame bricking 10 of 24 free throws in the contest. Tobias Harris led the Clippers with 27 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in the win. LA is 12-10 ATS on the road this season while the under is 11-10-1 ATS in those games.

The Clippers are currently 5th in the league in scoring offense with 114.5 points per game. LA is 14th in the league in rebounding with 45.5 boards per game and stand 22nd in assists with 22.8 per contest. The Clippers are below average defensively, ranking 24th in scoring defense by allowing 114.2 points per game. Tobias Harris is leading LA with 21 points plus eight boards a game this season. Danilo Gallinari (19 points, six rebounds), Lou Williams (18.7 points) and Montrezl Harrell (15.7 points, 6.8 boards) all average in double figures. Boban Marjanovic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (9.8 points), Marcin Gortat, Patrick Beverley, Avery Bradley, Luc Mbah a Moute and Mike Scott are all key pieces of the Clippers’ rotation for Doc Rivers. Mbah a Moute has been out with a knee injury and he is out until late January. LA is 9th in the league in field goal percentage as they shoot 47.1 percent from the floor. The Clippers are 26th in three pointers a game with 9.6 per contest and 4th in three-point shooting as they hit 38.7 percent of their long-range attempts.

Dallas Mavericks Playing Second Game of Back to Back

Dallas suffered a fourth straight defeat as they were upended by the Bucks on the road Monday afternoon. The Mavericks entered Monday night 13th in the Western Conference, five games behind the Clippers for the final playoff spot. Dallas trailed by nine after the opening quarter and led by two at the half before getting outscored 35-25 in the third quarter. The Mavericks couldn’t get closer than five in the final quarter. Dallas shot 41.4 percent from the field, including 14 of 40 from beyond the arc, and was 10 of 17 at the free throw line. Luka Doncic posted a triple-double with 18 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists in the loss. Dallas is 15-7 ATS at home this season while the under is 12-9-1 in those contests.

The Mavericks have been below average on the offensive end of the floor this season. Dallas is 20th in the league in scoring with 109.5 points per game. The Mavericks are 10th in rebounding with 46 boards per contest and are 24th in the league with 22.5 assists per game. Dallas is average on the defensive end, ranking 13th in scoring defense by allowing 109.7 points per game. Rookie Luka Doncic is currently leading the team with 20 points plus 6.8 rebounds and 5.2 assists per game this season. Wesley Matthews puts up 13.4 points a night while DeAndre Jordan is good for 11 points and 13.9 boards per contest. Dwight Powell, Dennis Smith Jr. (12.6 points), Dorian Finney-Smith are off to strong starts. Maximilian Kleber, Jalen Brunson, Devin Harris along with the recuperating Dirk Nowitzki, who made his season debut December 13 against Phoenix, Devin Harris and Harrison Barnes (18.1 points) will be key pieces for Rick Carlisle as the season wears on. Dallas is tied for 21st in the league in field goal percentage as they shoot 44.9 percent as a team. The Mavericks are 6th in threes with 12 per game but are tied for 20th in three-point shooting by hitting 34.6 percent from beyond the arc. Barea tore his Achilles against the Timberwolves on January 11 and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

The Clippers picked up a win in their last game and they had Monday off to get a breather before this contest. While the Mavericks have been good at home, they simply have no momentum at this point in time. Four straight losses and seven losses in their past nine straight games has knocked the Mavericks down the standings in the Western Conference. Dallas is a dismal 0-7 in the second game of back to back situations coming into this one: look for that trend to continue as the Clippers get the upper hand in this contest.

Prediction: LA Clippers

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Dallas has struggled over the last few weeks, dropping them from right in the mix for a playoff spot to five games back. The Mavericks are at a point where they have to seriously start making tough decisions about the future. Nowitzki hasn’t done much since returning to the mix and there are reports that the Kings are interested in Barnes. Smith Jr. is expected to return here after missing the last several games but it’s unclear how stable the relationship between team and player is. LA is trying to hold onto their playoff spot here and they picked up a win over the Spurs Sunday night. Can the Clippers make it two straight victories here?

The under is 4-0 in the Clippers’ last 4 road games, 6-1 in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a winning home record, 6-1 in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600 and 5-1 in their last 6 games playing on 1 day of rest. Dallas has seen the under go 4-1 in their last 5 home games and 7-2 in their last nine overall. With the Mavericks playing the second game of a back to back here, this one likely ends up under the total.

Prediction: Under

Half-Time Side Pick
Rating:

Dallas has stumbled badly in recent weeks and their inability to put together a full 48 minutes has cost them dearly. The Mavericks rallied from nine down after the opening quarter to lead by two against the Bucks at the half before fading. Dallas simply doesn’t have the pieces to rely on at this point in time to be expected to have a ton of success. LA got back in the win column after snapping a five game skid. The Clippers had Monday off and had time to rest while the Mavericks had to fly back from Milwaukee. Look for LA to get the edge at the half in this one.

Prediction: LA Clippers

Half-Time Total Bet
Rating:

You can’t expect the Mavericks to have a ton left in the tank after playing Monday afternoon in Milwaukee. This marks Dallas’s third game in four nights and that wears down the best of teams. The Mavericks are slumping and the Clippers know that they need wins to maintain their hold on the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. LA showed a solid performance against the Spurs, taking the lead early and never letting San Antonio jump back in front. The Clippers will wear Dallas down and make the Mavericks grind possessions: this one is under the number at the half.
