San Antonio Spurs (14-33) vs. Los Angeles Lakers (22-25)

The San Antonio Spurs head to Arena in Los Angeles, California, to square off against the Los Angeles Lakers on Wednesday night with the tip-off at 10:30 PM ET. These two Western Conference foes close down their four-game regular-season series, and the Lakers have a chance to sweep the Spurs for the first time since 2019-2020.

San Antonio misses Devin Vassell (knee), who’s been one of their best players so far this term. On the other side, the Lakers are without Anthony Davis (foot), Austin Reaves (hamstring), and Lonnie Walker IV (knee), while LeBron James (ankle) is questionable to play.

The Spurs continue a three-game road trip

The lowly San Antonio Spurs (14-33; 23-24 ATS) have only won one of their previous eight games overall. They are coming off Monday’s heavy 147-127 loss at the Portland Trail Blazers. It was another abysmal defensive effort from the Spurs, who allowed the Blazers to make 20 of their 33 attempts from beyond the 3-point line.

San Antonio made 52.2% of its field goals at Moda Center in Portland. The Spurs went 13-for-27 from downtown and posted a 30/15 assist-to-turnover ratio. Keldon Johnson led the way with 20 points, Jeremy Sochan notched 18 points, six rebounds, and four assists, while Tre Jones had 12 points and seven assists.

“We’re scoring enough points; we’re not getting enough stops. A lot of credit goes to Damian Lillard tonight. He was great. He got the better of us, a great player. He’s who he is, and we couldn’t stop him,” Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said.

The Spurs are 14th in the West with only the Houston Rockets behind them. San Antonio scores 111.6 points per 100 possessions (tied-25th in the NBA) on 54.0% shooting from inside the arc (18th) and 34.8% from downtown (23rd). The Spurs own the worst defensive rating in the league, allowing a whopping 120.4 points per 100 possessions.

The Lakers wrap up a back-to-back set

Tuesday’s games have been excluded from the analysis, and the 22-25 Los Angeles Lakers met the Los Angeles Clippers, searching for their third straight victory. Over their previous two outings, the Lakers have defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 122-121 as 7-point home underdogs and the Portland Trail Blazers 121-112 as 6-point road dogs.

Last Sunday, the Lakers overcame a massive 25-point deficit at Moda Center in Portland. Purple-and-Gold made 52.3% of their field goals (10-for-30 from deep) and outscored the Blazers 62-38 in the paint. LeBron James led the charge with 37 points and 11 rebounds, while Thomas Bryant posted a double-double of 31 points and 14 boards.

“We’ve been through it a lot. And I just want to try to continue to keep improving, throughout late games and one-possession games, two-possession games when we’re down late," James said. “And tonight, we did a good job of being able to execute defensively and offensively.”

The Lakers acquired Rui Hachimura from Washington on Monday, and the former first-round pick should suit up for Wednesday’s game against the Spurs. Los Angeles entered Tuesday’s battle against the Clippers as the No. 12 seed in the West. The Lakers were 18th in the league in adjusted offensive efficiency (113.7 points per 100 possessions) and 19th in adjusted defensive efficiency (114.6).

Insiders Status:

The Spurs’ defense has been a joke so far this season. San Antonio has allowed 131 or more points in five of its last six outings which tells you a lot about the Spurs’ current form. Hereof, I would take the Lakers to cover even if LeBron James hit the sidelines.

Both Thomas Bryant and Dennis Schroder have played well of late, and the Lakers should have enough weapons to deal with the slumping Spurs who lack talent everywhere. The Lakers are 3-0 SU and ATS in their previous three encounters with the Spurs in 2022-23.

Prediction: Los Angeles Lakers -7.5

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

The Lakers will push the ball in transition whenever they can. Los Angeles plays at the third-fastest pace in the NBA, tallying 101.8 possessions per 48 minutes, while the Spurs are seventh in the league with 101.1 possessions per 48 minutes.

We should see an up-tempo contest, and I would be shocked if it doesn’t turn out to be a proper high-scoring affair. The previous meeting between the Spurs and Lakers saw a staggering 281 points on the scoreboard, as Los Angeles beat San Antonio 143-138 in a pick ‘em contest at AT&T Center on November 26, 2022.

Prediction: Over 243
