A pair of Western Conference rivals take the hardwood in the Beehive State. The Houston Rockets continue a road trip as they face the Utah Jazz Thursday night. Houston won its seventh straight as they trounced the Lakers 118-95 to open this road trip Monday night. Utah had their six game win streak snapped with a 100-94 road loss to the Thunder Tuesday night. The Jazz has a 103-91 advantage in the all-time regular season series but it was the Rockets rolling to a 137-110 win at home in the first meeting this season on November 5.

Houston Rockets Seek Eighth Straight Victory

Utah had won six straight games but playing their fourth game in six nights finally caught up to them. The Jazz led by nine after the first quarter and by 12 after three before getting outscored 32-14 in the fourth to take the loss. Utah shot 43 percent from the field and went 11 of 33 from three point range in the contest. The Jazz were beaten 46-35 on the glass and turned the ball over 16 times as they failed to capitalize on 18 Oklahoma City turnovers. Donovan Mitchell led the Jazz with 31 points in the loss as he continues to play well in the absence of Rodney Hood.

The Jazz enter this contest 20th in the league in scoring offense with 103.3 points per game. Utah is in the lower half of the pack, ranking 26th in the league in rebounding with 40.5 boards per game. The Jazz is 20th in the league in assists with 22 per contest. Utah currently is 3rd in the league in scoring defense as they allow 98.8 points per game. Ricky Rubio is contributing in his first season with the Jazz with 11.9 points plus five assists and 1.71 steals per game on the year. Joe Ingles (10.6 points) and Rudy Gobert (12.6 points, 10.1 rebounds, 2.36 blocks) are solid options. Gobert missed 11 games with a tibia contusion but was cleared to return against Washington. Derrick Favors (12.9 points, 6.8 rebounds) and Rodney Hood (team leading 17.7 points) are other key pieces for the Jazz. Joe Johnson, Alec Burks, Jonas Jerebko, Thabo Sefolosha, Donovan Mitchell (17.2 points) and Ekpe Udoh are contributors for coach Quin Snyder. Utah is tied for 13th in the league as they shoot 45.5 percent from the floor. The Jazz are tied for 5th in the league in threes per game as they knock down 11.8 triples a night. Utah is 3rd in the league in three point shooting as they knock down 38.8 percent from beyond the arc.

Trends:

Houston

  • Rockets are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 road games
  • Rockets are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 vs. Western Conference
  • Rockets are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 games playing on 3 or more days rest

Utah

  • Jazz are 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games playing on 1 day of rest

Utah was on a roll but the combination of injuries and the schedule caught up to them. The Jazz have been minus Hood and Joe Johnson while Gobert, who just returned, was a non-factor against the Thunder due to foul trouble. Utah doesn’t have the depth where they can be minus that many key contributors in crunch time against a decent foe and win consistently. Houston has rolled over teams of late as they are firing on all cylinders. The Rockets bombed the Jazz at home last month: while the final isn’t that one-sided, they get the edge here again.

Pick: Houston Rockets -5.5

Mitchell continues to impress as a rookie for the Jazz. He scored at least 20 points for the fourth straight game in the loss to the Thunder. The last Utah rookie to accomplish that feat was Darrell Griffith back in 1979-80 and he went on to win Rookie of the Year. While it’s a tough sell that will happen for Mitchell, he’s developing nicely and gives the team another backcourt option. Houston is just dominating teams right now as they’ve reeled off seven straight wins. The Rockets have won 13 of their last 14 games and only one of those wins came by less than 14 points: a 117-113 home win over the Cavaliers back on November 9. That’s a run of dominance for certain.

The under is 5-1 in the Rockets’ last 6 overall, 5-1 in their last 6 games following a straight up win, 5-1 in their last 6 games following a straight up win of more than 10 points, 5-1 in their last 6 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game, 4-1 in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record and 8-2 in their last 10 against Western Conference foes. This one is a tough contest but the Jazz, playing at home, keep it under the total.
