It’s an inter-conference matchup of teams looking to the future in the Big Apple. The Dallas Mavericks continue a road trip as they travel to face the New York Knicks Tuesday night. Dallas had won two straight before getting hammered 105-82 at home by Houston Sunday night. New York lost their seventh straight as they were thrashed 132-106 at home by Toronto Sunday afternoon. The Mavericks hold a 39-34 lead in the all-time regular season series but the Knicks took a 100-96 win on the road in the first meeting this season January 7.

Dallas Mavericks Seek Third Win in Four Games

Dallas had won two straight games but they were run over in the second game of a back to back by the league’s top team in the Rockets. The Mavericks look to regroup and win for the third time in four games with a victory here over the slumping Knicks. Dallas hung in for a half as they rallied from 11 down after one quarter to cut the lead to one at the half. The Mavericks were outscored 32-16 in the third quarter however and that was all she wrote. Dallas shot 35.1 percent from the field, including a putrid five of 31 from beyond the arc. Dwight Powell led the Mavericks with 20 points in a losing effort.

The Mavericks have struggled on the offensive end of the floor this season. Dallas is 27th in the league in scoring with 102.3 points per game. The Mavericks are 25th in rebounding with 41.1 boards per contest and are 16th in the league with 22.6 assists per game. Dallas is slightly above average on the defensive end, ranking 11th in scoring defense by allowing 104.8 points per game. Harrison Barnes leads the Mavericks with 18.4 points plus 6.4 rebounds per game. Dennis Smith Jr. (14.8 points, 4.9 assists) is the point guard of the future: he missed two games with a knee effusion. He missed six games with a strained hip as well this season. Yogi Ferrell (10.1 points) and J.J. Barea (11.4 points, 6.3 assists) are contributing in the backcourt. Doug McDermott, Salah Mejri, Nerlens Noel, Wesley Matthews (12.7 points), Kyle Collinsworth, Dwight Powell and the ageless Dirk Nowitzki are all cogs in the Mavericks’ rotation. Matthews was announced to have fractured fibula on March 12 and is done for the year. Noel has been out since November 22 after breaking his thumb and then having surgery to repair a torn ligament in it. Dallas is 26th in the league in field goal percentage as they shoot 44.5 percent as a team. The Mavericks are tied for 5th in threes with 11.7 per game but are tied for 15th in three point shooting by hitting 36.3 percent from beyond the arc.

New York Knicks Waving the White Flag

If you hadn’t turned out the lights on the Knicks before, this recent stretch certainly should have done it for you. New York lost their seventh straight and 15th in the last 16 games as they were pasted by Toronto. The Knicks were down just five after the opening quarter and eight at the half before seeing Toronto outscore them 67-49 in the second half. New York’s bench group was outscored 69-29 by Toronto’s reserves in the contest. The Knicks shot 45.5 percent from the field and went seven of 21 from long range while getting hammered 52-37 on the glass. Tim Hardaway Jr. led New York with 25 in the loss.

The Knicks are 21st in the league in scoring as they average 104 points per game. New York is 14th in the league in rebounding with 43.9 boards per contest while standing 14th with 22.9 assists per game. The Knicks are 19th in scoring defense as they allow 107.6 points per game. Kristaps Porzingis averaged 22.7 points, 6.6 boards and 2.4 blocks a night to lead the team. He’s now finished for the year after his ACL tear against Milwaukee February 6. He underwent surgery on February 13 and has a lengthy recovery ahead. Enes Kanter chips in 14.3 points plus 10.8 rebounds per night, Tim Hardaway Jr. adds 17.4 points a contest while Kyle O’Quinn chips in 6.9 points plus 5.6 rebounds per contest. Hardaway Jr. returned on January 12 after missing 20 games with a stress fracture in his leg. Courtney Lee (12.6 points), Emmanuel Mudiay, Ron Baker, Michael Beasley (12.3 points, 5.4 rebounds), Troy Williams, Jarrett Jack and rookie Frank Ntilikina have to contribute for the Knicks to have any success. Baker is out after having arthroscopic surgery on his shoulder. Trey Burke, who was having a big season in the G League, and Luke Kornet will get a chance to showcase their ability down the stretch. The Knicks are 13th in field goal percentage as they shoot 46.3 percent as a team. New York is 30th with 7.8 threes per game while ranking 25th in three point shooting as they hit 35.1 percent of their attempts from beyond the arc.

Trends:

Dallas

  • Mavericks are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a double-digit loss at home
  • Mavericks are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 games following a straight up loss of more than 10 points
  • Mavericks are 7-1 ATS in their last 8 Tuesday games

New York

  • Knicks are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 home games
  • Knicks are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 vs. Western Conference
  • Knicks are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 after scoring 100 points or more in their previous game

Madison Square Garden used to be a safe haven for the Knicks but that 1-10 ATS mark in their last 11 at home is galling. The Knicks gave up a season-high 132 points to Toronto, leading both coach Jeff Hornacek and Lee to say that there are players not giving maximum effort on the defensive end while refusing to name names. Dallas is struggling but they’re playing hard, which apparently isn’t what can be said for the Knicks. New York is at home but unlike Motel 6, you can turn the light out on them: look for Dallas to get the win and split the season series.

Pick: Dallas Mavericks
