Just when it appeared that the Pistons might be turning the corner after acquiring Blake Griffin, the team enters Tuesday’s matchup having lost 20 of their last 13 games.
Pistons snap skid vs. Bulls
The Pistons snapped a four-game losing streak on Friday night, defeating the Chicago Bulls at home 99-83. Blake Griffin scored 25 points to lead the team in scoring, while Reggie Bullock chipped in 21 to help pace the Pistons on offense. Rookie Luke Kennard came off of the bench to finish with 10 points, six rebounds, and four assists to help Detroit get back on the winning track.
Blake Griffin seems to have found his stroke from distance as of late. The 28-year-old power forward comes into Tuesday’s game shooting just 33.5 percent from three-point range this year, but he’s connected on 12 of his last 24 attempts over the last four games. During that span, he’s averaging 28.0 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 5.8 assists per game.
This week, ESPN released its list of the NBA’s 25 best players under the age of 25. Pistons’ center Andre Drummond ranked No. 12 on the list. Drummond made his second All-Star Game appearance last month as an injury replacement. He is shooting a career-best 61.6 percent from the free throw line this season, while averaging 14.9 points and 15.8 rebounds per game.
Jazz just 1.5 games out of 4th place
The Utah Jazz are currently in 10th place in the Western Conference standings, but they are only a game-and-a-half out of home court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Such is life in the wacky Western Conference, where seven teams are separated by only 1.5 games and fighting for the final five playoff spots.
The Jazz won their sixth straight contest on Sunday, defeating the New Orleans Pelicans 116-99, despite a triple-double from emerging MVP candidate Anthony Davis. Davis finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 blocks on the night, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a solid second half from the Jazz. Ricky Rubio finished with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists on the night, while Donovan Mitchell chipped in 27 to help the Jazz outscore New Orleans 68-48 after halftime.
Quinn Snyder continues to find ways to get his team to play hard on the defensive end of the floor. The Jazz rank third in the NBA in defensive efficiency this season, holding opposing teams to just 102.6 points per 100 possessions for the season.
- Pistons are 0-4 ATS in their last 4 games following a straight up win.
- Pistons are 0-7 ATS in their last 7 road games.
- Jazz are 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.
- Jazz are 5-0 ATS in their last 5 vs. Eastern Conference.
The Jazz have been red-hot as of late and the Pistons seem to be tanking as the year comes to a close. Utah remains in the thick of the Western Conference playoff race, so this will be an important game for them and this is just another opportunity for Jazz rookie Donovan Mitchell to stick it to the Pistons for taking Luke Kennard over him in last season’s NBA Draft. Take the Jazz to cover the spread at home in this matchup on Tuesday night.
Pick: Utah Jazz
The Jazz are one of the NBA’s best defensive teams and they’ve been playing at a very high level for the past two months. Utah ranks third in the NBA in defensive efficiency and the Pistons enter Tuesday’s matchup ranked among the worst offensive teams in the NBA. After a fast start, Detroit is now scoring just 104.2 points per 100 possessions, which ties them with the Lakers for 22nd in the NBA. Take the under in this game on Tuesday night.
- Under is 5-1 in Pistons last 6 Tuesday games.
- Under is 5-1 in Pistons last 6 vs. NBA Northwest.
- Under is 6-0 in the last 6 meetings.
- Under is 4-1 in the last 5 meetings in Utah.
