Rutgers Scarlet Knights (11-5 SU, 4-5-1 ATS, 4-6 O/U) at Iowa Hawkeyes (9-7 SU, 5-7-1 ATS, 6-6-1 O/U)

When and Where: Sunday, Jan. 8, Carver-Hawkeyes Arena, Iowa City, Ia., 4:30pmET

Line: Iowa -8

Total: 147

Rutgers is off to an 0-3 start in the Big Ten after falling to Michigan State, 93-65 on Wednesday on the road. Iowa lost to Nebraska on the road in double overtime, 93-90 on Jan. 5. That’s after beating Michigan in overtime at home, 86-83. Last season, Iowa beat up on Rutgers on the road, 90-76 in their only matchup.

Rutgers gets carved up by Sparty

Michigan State shot 57.9 percent from the field in a 28-point home win over Rutgers. Eron Harris scored 24 points in just 19 minutes to lead the Spartans. Rutgers was only down by 10 at the half before being outscored 51-33 in the second half. Corey Sanders led Rutgers with 22 points and Nigel Johnson added 15. The Scarlet Knights shot 41.7 percent from the field and 37.5 percent (3-8) from beyond the arc. They didn’t help themselves at the line by making just 12-of-27 (44.4%).

Rutgers appeared to be on the right path by winning five straight games from Dec. 3 to Dec. 18. But when they’ve faced tougher competition, it’s been back to defeat city. Guard Nigel Johnson leads the way with 12.1 points per game on 38.3 percent shooting. Guard Mike Williams adds 11.5 points per game and 46.3 percent from the field (38.2% 3pt). The Scarlet Knights average 69.9 points per game and shoots 42.7 percent from the floor (29.6% 3pt). They allow just 64.2 points per game (34th) and 38.8 percent shooting.

Jok does his part in Iowa’s loss in OT

Peter Jok might be the best player in the Big Ten this season or at least best guard. But he’s playing with a young team and doesn’t always get a lot of help. On Thursday night, he scored 34 points on 12-of-24 shooting in 41 minutes with six rebounds. At one point in the second half, Jok scored 16 straight points. But the Hawkeyes fell in double overtime at Nebraska by three and Jok fouled out fouled out in the second overtime period. Freshman guard Isaiah Moss finished with 17 points for Iowa, who fell to 1-2 in the Big Ten.  Iowa shot 44.2 percent from the floor and outrbounded the Huskers by seven. But the also committed 19 turnovers and allowed Nebraska to shoot 10 of 23 from the three point line.

Jok leads Iowa with 22.9 points per game on 44.9 percent shooting and 41.6 percent from downtown. Forward Tyler Cook adds 13.2 points per game on 56.5 percent shooting. Iowa averages 83.9 points per game and shoot 46 percent from the floor. They allow 78.3 points per game and 42.4 percent from the floor.

College Basketball Trends:

Rutgers is:

n/a

Iowa is:

  • 2-9 ATS last 11 vs. Big Ten.
  • 3-10 ATS last 13 following an ATS loss.

Hard to pick Rutgers as a dog? Not really. Going against Iowa here, who has a bunch of guys and Jok. Two straight overtimes within the last four days can’t help either. Rutgers at least plays defense and will make this a close one.

Pick: Rutgers +8
