Today in CBB action, the San Jose State Spartans will duke it out with the Air Force Falcons at Clune Arena in Colorado Springs, Colorado. San Jose has gone 8-7 on the year overall, but they are just 1-3 in the MWC, while the Falcons have gone 2-2 in league play and they are 9-8 overall.
Spartans Get Blitzed In Aztec-Land
The San Jose State Spartans are 8-7 overall, but they are in last place in the MWC with a 1-3 record. This could be a very long year for the in league play. They come in off a 15 point road loss to San Diego State and they really struggled offensively in that game as they hit just 37.9% of their shots overall, including just 15% from long range. That won’t win you many games. Leading the team in scoring in that game was Brandon Clarke, who had 25 points and was the only player on the team that scored in double figures in the loss. It’s also hard to win games when just one person is scoring for you. On the year, the Spartans have just four players on the team that have averaged more than 5.9 ppg and it is Brandon Clarke that has led them at 16.3 ppg, while 2nd is Ryan Welage at 11.9 ppg. They are the only two to average in double figures for the Spartans.
The Spartans have now averaged just 64.5 ppg and have allowed 73.5 ppg in league play, while on the road overall this year they have averaged 64.7 ppg and have allowed 73.8 ppg. San Jose enters this game ranked 192nd in the nation in scoring, putting up 73.7 ppg, while also ranking 243rd in FG% (43.0%), 222nd in 3-point shooting (34.1%) and 189th in free throw shooting (69.3%). At the defensive end of the floor they have been average as they come in ranked 170th in points allowed, giving up 71.5 ppg, while also ranking 241st in defensive FG% (44.7%) and 173rd in 3-point defense (34.4%).
Hayden Graham Leads Falcons Over Bulldogs
The Air Force Falcons have gotten off to a 2-2 start in the MWC. They have won both their league home games and have lost both their league road games. Their last game was at home and they topped Fresno State in that game by a score of 81-72. The Falcons didn’t shoot good from long range, but they shot 51.9% from the floor overall and hit 22 of 29 from the charity stripe. Leading their attack in the game was Hayden Graham, who had 21 points and grabbed eight boards as well. Trevor Lyons also had a good game with 18 points, while Jacob Van had 14. The Falcons have not really been known as a good offensive team in past year, but this year has been different so far. Air Force has six players that have averaged at least 7.9 ppg so far and they have been led by Graham, who is putting up 12.1 ppg, while Van is 2nd at 11.9 ppg and both Frank Toohey and Zach Kocur both round out the double-digit scorers on the team with 10.8 ppg.
The Falcons have averaged 78.9 ppg and have allowed 70.7 ppg at home for the year, while in league play overall they have averaged 72.3 ppg and have allowed 78.5 ppg. Air Force checks in at 102nd in the nation in scoring, putting up just 77.2 ppg, while also ranking 127th in shooting overall (45.5%), 18th in 3-point shooting (39.9%) and 61st in free throw shooting (73.8%). At the defensive end of the floor they have not been great as they come in ranked 223rd in points allowed, giving up 73.5 ppg, while also ranking 273rd in defensive FG% (45.4%) and 215th in 3-point defense (35.2%).
San Jose State is:
- 17-36-3 ATS in their last 56 games following a ATS loss
- 1-6 ATS in their last seven games overall
Air Force is:
- The Favorite is 5-1 ATS the last six games in this series
- 8-3 ATS in their last 11 home games vs. a team with a losing road record
Neither team is playing great ball right now as the Falcons have lost five of their last eight games, while the Spartans are just 1-3 in league play so far. The Spartans are just 2-4 on the road, while the Falcons are 9-2 here at home and I feel that they are the play here. They have averaged a strong 78.9 ppg here at home, while the Spartans have put up just 64.5 ppg on the road. The offense of the Falcons will be the difference here as they move their home record to 10-2 on the year with a nice double-digit win in this one.
