Cal State Fullerton vs. UC Irvine
NCAA Basketball: Saturday, January 14th, 8:00 pm EST
Line: UC Irvine -10
Cal State Fullerton heads to Irvine in a battle of Big West teams on Saturday night. Tre Coggins had a monster game for Fullerton in the win over Cal Poly on Thursday night. He had 34 points and made six three pointers in the 87-74 win. The win improved the Titans to 8-8 overall and 2-1 in the Big West. Irvine beat UCSB 66-62 on Thursday and improved to 3-0 on conference and 10-9 overall.
Fullerton likes to play an uptempo type of game and they are averaging a very healthy 76.6 points per game. They give up 77.6. The Anteaters prefer to slow it down, and generally play games in the 60’s. They average 68.7 and give up 66.2 a game.
All Coggins, all day
Tre Coggins was the all everything guard for Cal State Fullerton in Thursday’s win. He came off the bench to score 34 points, and wasn’t from firing up a million shots. He was on fire. He made 11 of 15 shots total and made six of seven from beyond the arc. For good measure, he hit all six free throws.
He led the team in scoring, but the whole offense was unstoppable. They shot an astounding 64.4% from the field, making 29 of 45 shots. They made eight of their 14 three-pointers and were 21 of 31 from inside the arc. Quite an offensive performance from the Titans, but they will now face an Anteater team who likes to slow it down more than Cal Poly.
Irvine is unimpressive, but wins
UC Irvine improved to 3-0 on Thursday night, but it’s hardly one they will thrown on their highlight reel. They beat the 2-12 UCSB Gauchos by a mere four points. Irvine built a seven point halftime lead, but then had to fight off the frisky Gauchos down the stretch. Irvine only had two scorers in double digits and had to rely on the great defense as usual.
They will need that defense against a Fullerton team that couldn’t miss on Thursday, shooting over 60% from the field. With the game at home, I think the Anteaters will be able to control tempo and I think they slow the Titans offense down. Irvine’s defense has been their calling card all year and they will need it on Saturday.
The Cal State Fullerton Titans are:
- 17-35-1 ATS in their last 53 games following a straight up win.
- 2-6 ATS in their last 8 games following a ATS win.
- 4-12 ATS in their last 16 vs. Big West.
The UC Irvine Anteaters are:
- 6-2 ATS in their last 8 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
- 19-7 ATS in their last 26 games following a ATS loss.
While the Anteaters got off to a lousy start this year, they are playing great basketball as of late. They are the better team, at home, and have all the trends in their favor. It’s hard to go against that so let’s lay the points at home. They are now 3-0 in conference and their tough early season schedule is paying dividends now that the weak Big West conference has started.
