Saturday, January 14th, 2017 at 10:00 p.m. EST
Point Spread: UC Santa Barbara Gauchos -2
The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos are hosting the Cal Poly Mustangs in this matchup between in-state rivals. These two conference rivals have struggled in the Big West this season. The Gauchos are 2-12 on the season, and they’re still winless in the Big West with a 0-2 conference record. The Mustangs have had a bit more success. Cal Poly is 5-11, but they’ve also failed to win a conference game. Which one of these Big West bottom dwellers will pick up their first conference win of the season on Saturday night in Santa Barbara?
Cal Poly can’t keep up with the Titans
The Cal Poly Mustangs dropped Thursday night’s game against the Cal State Fullerton Titans, losing 87-74. The Mustangs struggled to keep up with the Titans in the second half. They were outscored by 9 points in the final 20 minutes of play. Donovan Fields had a nice game for the Mustangs. He came off the bench to lead Cal Poly in scoring with 15 points. Fields also added 2 rebounds and a steal in the loss.
Cal Poly’s defense was horrendous against Cal State Fullerton. They allowed the Titans to shoot over 64% from the field. The Mustangs didn’t do a very good job of defending the three-point line. The Titans made over 57% of their three-point attempts against Cal Poly. The Mustangs were also beaten up on the boards. They only grabbed 26 rebounds against Cal State Fullerton. Cal Poly has been the worst rebounding team in the Big West this season. They’re averaging just 31.4 rebounds per game.
Late surge comes up short for the Gauchos
The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos nearly completed an impressive comeback on Thursday night, but it wasn’t meant to be. The Gauchos lost 66-62 to the UC Irvine Anteaters, despite an impressive rally in the second half. Gabe Vincent and Eric Childress both had nice games for UC Santa Barbara. Vincent led all scorers with 15 points. He also added 6 assists, 3 rebounds, and a steal. Childress posted 12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals.
The Gauchos shot the ball very well from beyond the arc in the loss to UC Irvine. They connected on over 46% of their shots from the outside on Thursday night. UC Santa Barbara also managed to do a great job on the boards. They collected 36 rebounds in the loss. The Gauchos have been the Big West’s best rebounding team this season. They average over 39 rebounds per game.
The Cal Poly Mustangs are:
- 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of less than .400.
- 3-10 ATS in their last 13 road games vs. a team with a losing home record.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as an underdog.
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos are:
- 7-0 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
- 5-0 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
The Gauchos haven’t looked great this season, but the Cal Poly Mustangs are falling apart. The Mustangs have lost their last seven games in a row. Additionally, Cal Poly is just 1-8 on the road this season. The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos have been very competitive in their past few games at home. The Gauchos have now beaten the Mustangs five times in a row, and they won their last game against Cal Poly by 19 points. I like UC Santa Barbara to win this one and cover on Saturday night.
