It’s a battle of Conference USA foes on the hardwood in the Tar Heel State. The Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles are on the road to battle the Charlotte 49ers Saturday night. Southern Mississippi had their two game win streak snapped with a 54-50 road loss to Old Dominion Thursday night. Charlotte dropped their fourth straight as they fell 79-73 at home to Louisiana Tech Thursday night. The 49ers have taken nine of the last 10 matchups, including an 82-76 road win in the most recent meeting on January 7, 2016.
Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles Try to Get Back on Track
Southern Miss had won back to back games but those came at home. The Golden Eagles couldn’t come up with enough key buckets to defeat Old Dominion on the road. Southern Mississippi shot just 35.3 percent from the field and went 8 of 27 from beyond the arc. The poor shooting negated a solid defensive effort. The Golden Eagles limited Old Dominion to 33.3 percent shooting overall and 3 of 16 from three point range. Southern Miss lost the rebounding battle 43-28 and perhaps dropped the game at the charity stripe. The Golden Eagles were 6 of 8 at the line while allowing Old Dominion to hit 19 of 27 attempts. Cortez Edwards had 13 points and six rebounds to lead Southern Mississippi in the loss.
Points have been hard to come by for the Golden Eagles as they are 344th in the nation with 61.1 points per game. Southern Miss is tied for 289th in rebounding with 34 boards per contest and is tied for 273rd with 12.3 assists per game. The Golden Eagles are tied for 147th in scoring defense as they allow 70.7 points per game. Southern Miss shoots 40.2 percent from the floor as a team this year. The Golden Eagles average 6.3 threes a night but hit on only 29.9 percent of their long range attempts. Quinton Campbell is the only player averaging in double figures with 11.9 points per contest. Tim Rowe is the team’s second leading scorer with 9.9 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. Cortez Edwards, Eddie Davis III and Raheem Watts all average better than seven points a game. Kevin Holland and Michael Ramey each put up at least five points a night.
Charlotte 49ers Seeking First Win of 2017
Charlotte has dropped four in a row and hasn’t won since New Year’s Eve when they beat North Texas. The 49ers put together a rally in the second half but a 14 point halftime deficit proved to be too much to overcome in the contest. Charlotte hit just 40.4 percent from the field despite shooting 12 of 31 from three point range in the game. Defense proved to be a major problem as the 49ers allowed the Bulldogs to hit a sizzling 61.2 percent from the field. Charlotte was fortunate the game was as close as it was seeing that Louisiana Tech had 30 free throw attempts: the Bulldogs made just 16 of them. Braxton Ogbueze led the team with 26 points in the defeat.
The 49ers are very good on the offensive end of the floor as they enter the game 72nd in the nation with 78.8 points per game. Charlotte is 322nd in rebounding with 32.3 boards a game and stand 249th in assists with 12.8 per contest. Defense has been a serious issue for the 49ers as the team is just 341st in the nation in scoring defense as they allow 83.1 points per contest. Charlotte shoots 45 percent from the floor as a team. The 49ers splash an average of 8.1 three pointers a night while shooting 39.4 percent from beyond the arc. Jon Davis leads the team with 18.8 points plus 3.7 assists per game. Braxton Ogbueze puts up 11.1 points a night, Andrien White chips in 12 points per game and Anthony Vanhook contributes 9.5 points, 6.4 boards and 3.3 dimes a night. Hudson Price, Najee Garvin, Quentin Jackson and J.C. Washington each put up at least 4.6 points per night for Charlotte.

Southern Mississippi has won two of three but the fact remains the Golden Eagles aren’t very good on the road. The Golden Eagles are 0-5 on the road this season. On the bright side, they get a team that is winless in the 2017 calendar year. The Golden Eagles are improving but they can’t score with the 49ers. Davis has a big game and leads Charlotte to a victory.
