DePaul Blue Demons (8-9 overall, 5-11 ATS, 9-7 O/U) vs. Marquette Golden Eagles (11-5 SU, 8-8 ATS, 9-7 O/U)

NCAAB: Saturday, January 14, 2017, BMO Harris Bradley Center, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 2 pm ET

Spread: Marquette -16, Over/Under: 153

It’s a battle of a pair of Big East Conference foes in the Midwest. The DePaul Blue Demons head north as they take on the Marquette Golden Eagles Saturday afternoon. DePaul snapped a five game losing skid by nipping Providence 64-63 at home Tuesday night. Marquette snapped a two game slide with an 89-86 overtime win over Seton Hall at home Wednesday night. The Golden Eagles have won eight of the last ten meetings. It was the Blue Demons claiming a 57-56 win in the last matchup here on January 20, 2016.

DePaul Blue Demons Hope to Build Momentum

DePaul had been in a slump before picking up their first conference win of the season by edging Providence. The Blue Demons trailed by nine at the half but outscored the Friars 38-28 in the second hal to get the win. DePaul shot 45.8 percent from the field despite going 2 of 12 from three point range in the contest. Free throw shooting was good on both sides as Providence was 18 of 22 while DePaul hit 18 of 21. Billy Garrett Jr. had seven of his team leading 14 points in the final 28 seconds of the game, including the game winning three point play with 4.7 seconds to go, to help the Blue Demons get a win.

The Blue Demons are a below average offensive unit as they come into this one 245th in the nation with 71 points per game. DePaul is tied for 254th in the nation in rebounding with 34.8 boards per contest and tied for 317th with 11.3 assists per game. The Blue Demons are slightly above average defensively as they come in tied for 162nd in scoring defense by allowing 71.2 points a night. DePaul shoots 43.5 percent from the floor as a team this season. The Blue Demons knock down 5.1 triples a night while connecting on just 30.7 percent from beyond the arc. Eli Cain leads the team with 16.9 points plus 4.4 boards a game. Billy Garrett Jr. is the only other player for DePaul averaging in double figures with 15.1 points plus 3.3 assists a contest. Tre’Darius McCallum, Brandon Cyrus and Darrick Wood are the only other players putting up even five points a night for the Blue Demons.

Marquette Golden Eagles Go for Back to Back Conference Wins

Marquette evened their conference mark at 2-2 and exacted revenge on a Seton Hall team that beat them last month by getting an overtime victory. The Golden Eagles let a five point halftime edge slip away but managed to pull the game out in the extra session. Marquette shot 47.6 percent from the floor in the game and hit 9 of 20 from three point range. In addition, the Golden Eagles cashed 20 of 28 free throw attempts, which helped seal the game late. Marquette was helped by 19 Seton Hall turnovers and the Pirates missing 13 of 34 free throw attempts. That helped make up for a 54-33 pounding on the glass as the Golden Eagles allowed 27 offensive rebounds. Markus Howard had 22 points and six assists to lead Marquette in the win.

The Golden Eagles are 20th in the nation in scoring offense with 83.9 points per game. Marquette is currently tied for 300th in rebounding with 33.8 boards per contest but stands 32nd in assists with 17.1 per game. The Golden Eagles are 205th in scoring defense as they allow 72.9 points a night so far this year. Marquette is shooting 48.3 percent from the floor this season. The Golden Eagles hit 9.9 three pointers a night on 40.9 percent shooting from beyond the arc. JaJuan Johnson leads the team with 13.2 points along with three assists and 2.6 steals per game. Haanif Cheatham contributes 11.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game. Luke Fischer averages 12.5 points plus 6.3 rebounds while Markus Howard chips in 12.3 points a game. Katin Reinhardt contributes 10.1 points plus 2.6 boards per contest. Sam Hauser, Duane Wilson and Traci Carter are each scoring at least four points a night.

Trends:

DePaul

  • Blue Demons are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games
  • Blue Demons are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 road games vs. a team with a winning home record
  • Blue Demons are 1-10-1 ATS in their last 12 games following a straight up win

Marquette

  • Golden Eagles are 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win

We just saw Marquette pick up a big win over a Seton Hall team that beat them last month. They now face a DePaul team that pulled an upset last season in this venue. It’s a safe bet that Marquette will be out to avenge that defeat as well. The Golden Eagles are a high scoring team with plenty of perimeter firepower and solid scoring options. DePaul lacks both of those and it will be clear pretty quickly. Marquette picks up the win and climbs above .500 in Big East action here.

Pick: Marquette Golden Eagles -16
