The Elon Phoenix are in their third season in the CAA and appear to have their best team, even though they’ve started out at 2-3 in the league. They are coming off beating Hofstra, 96-80 on Thursday. The Dukes lost their second straight game, falling at home to Charleston, 53-51 on Thursday.
Santa Ana continues his hot shooting
Elon shooting guard Steven Santa Ana opened up conference play with a total of eight points against UNCW (79-63 loss) and Charleston (66-54 loss). Since then, he’s scored 29 against William & Mary (88-85 loss), 15 against Towson (72-61 win) and 29 against Hofstra in a 96-80 win on Thursday. The 6-4 sophomore now averages 13.4 points per game and shoots 40.6 percent from the field (35.3% 3pt). Forward Tyler Seibring added 22 points, seven rebounds and five assists in the win over the Pride. The Phoenix shot 57.9 percent from the field and 14-of-27 from beyond the arc. They held Hofstra to just 8-of-34 from beyond the arc.
Elon averages 77.1 points per game and shoots 46.2 percent from the field (36.2% 3pt). They allow 73.2 points per game and 43.3 percent from the field.
Duke struggle on O against Cougars tough D
James Madison scored 51 points against Charleston, which is not a stunner, as the Cougars allow around 58 points per game. Jackson Kent led the Dukes with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting (3-7 3pt), while Yohanny Dalembert added 13 points and six boards. Defensively, the Dukes didn’t do a bad job, allowing just 39.1 percent from the field. They also outrebounded the Cougars, 32-26. The Dukes were up by 10 with 16:50 left and four with 3:23 left in the game. But Joe Chealey hit a jumper with 24 seconds left for the Cougars to take a 52-51 lead and one that they wouldn’t relinquish.
JMU averages 64.6 points per game and shoots 44.5 percent from the field (31.9% 3pt). . They allow 67.8 points per game and 41.8 percent from the field.

James Madison had a chance to beat one of the best teams in the conference at home and couldn’t finish. Elon isn’t as good as Charleston, especially on the defensive end. Expect JMU to take advantage of their defense.
