Line: Kansas -12
The second ranked Kansas Jayhawks will host the Oklahoma State Cowboys in a Big 12 battle Saturday afternoon from the Allen Fieldhouse. Oklahoma State is coming off a 96-86 home loss to Iowa State, and Kansas defeated Oklahoma 81-70 on Tuesday night. Each team notched a win in last year’s season series.
Cowboys Let Late Lead Slip Away
The Oklahoma State Cowboys could not hold a late lead in their 96-86 home loss to Iowa State on Wednesday night. The Cowboys held a five point lead late in game but could not finish off a strong Iowa State team. Oklahoma State made 34 of 64 shots for a solid 53% efficiency from the field, but Iowa State was able to make ten three-pointers. Phil Forte III was outstanding, sinking 24 points on 9 for 11 shooting. The senior guard has really heated up over the last five games, and is now scoring an average of 14.1 points per game. Cowboys’ leading scorer Jawun Evans was not at his best in the loss, going 4 for 14 from the field for a total of 12 points. The sophomore guard is a tremendous talent, now averaging 18.4 points per game. The Cowboys have now dropped four straight games and are still aiming for their first Big 12 win of the season. They are currently ranked 33rd overall in Ken Pomeroy’s College Basketball Rankings.
Oklahoma State features an explosive offense that is now averaging 88.6 points per game, good for eighth in the nation, and are shooting 45.7% from the field. The Cowboys have struggled on the defensive end, allowing an average of 78.8 points per game, placing them down at 310th overall.
Jayhawks Notch 15th Consecutive Victory
The Kansas Jayhawks rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat the Oklahoma Sooners 81-70 on the road on Tuesday night. Kansas could not get their shots to fall in the first half but were firing on all cylinders in the second half and finished the night shooting 40% from the field, and held the Sooners to 37% shooting. Frank Mason III was outstanding, sinking 20.4 points on 11 for 20 shooting. The senior guard is having a great season, averaging a team-leading 20.4 points per game, which also leads the Big 12 in scoring. Mason III is also shooting a sizzling 55% from beyond the arc, and leads the team in assists. Josh Jackson also played well, chipping in with 16 points, and now sits second in team scoring with 15.6 points per game. The Jayhawks have now won an impressive 15 straight games after losing their first game of the season, and have a good chance to extend their streak even further with their next three games against non-ranked opponents.
Kansas is one of the best offensive teams in the Nation, averaging 86.3 points per game, ranking them 14th overall, and are shooting a dazzling 50.5% as a team. The Jayhawks are allowing an average of 69.8 points per game, placing them 126th overall.
The Oklahoma State Cowboys are:
- 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games after a double-digit loss at home.
- 3-10-2 ATS in their last 15 games against a team with a winning percentage above .600.
The Kansas Jayhawks are:
- 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games after an ATS loss.
- home team is 6-0 ATS in the last six meetings between Oklahoma State and Kansas.
- 23-10-2 ATS in their last 35 home games against a team with a losing road record.
I am taking Kansas in this matchup. Oklahoma State plays terrible defense that ranks 310th in the Country, and they are allowing opponents to shoot 48%, so I expect Kansas to pour on the points. Kansas has been very consistent on offense, scoring 81 or more points in nine out of their last ten games. Also, the Jayhawks play solid defense, so they should be able to slow down Oklahoma State’s offense.
Pick: Kansas -12
Kansas is relentless on offense and no defense has really been able to slow them down so I expect them to score a ton of points against the Cowboys weak defense. The Jayhawks are unstoppable on their home court as the over is 5-0 in their last five home games. The Cowboys feature an explosive offense so they should have some success as well, plus the over is 4-1-1 in their last six games.
