Florida State is coming off an impressive 88-72 win over Duke at home on Tuesday. They face a Tar Heels team that has won three straight, including a 93-87 road win over Wake Forest on Wednesday. North Carolina has won six straight in this series, including a 106-90 win from Tallahassee last season.
Noles overwhelm Blue Devils
Florida State played Duke without forward Amile Jefferson and it showed as the Seminoles overpowered the younger Blue Devils inside. But even with Jefferson, Duke has some defensive issues. FSU exploited them on their way to a 16-point home win and their 12th straight win overall. A win over North Carolina would mean that FSU has broken their school record for most consecutive wins. Junior point guard Xavier Rathan-Mayes led the Seminoles with 21 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Florida State shot 53 percent from the floor and forced 16 turnovers. They held Duke to just 41.1 percent from the floor, including just nine from embattled junior point guard Grayson Allen.
Florida State averages 86.7 points per game (13th) and 50.8 percent from the floor (6th). They allow just 68.9 points per game and 39.1 percent from the floor (31.3% 3pt). Guard Dwayne Bacon leads the Noles with 17.8 points per game on 47.6 percent shooting. Forward Jonathan Isaac adds 12.1 points per game and 51.8 percent from the floor (34.9% 3pt).
Heels’ frontcourt dominates Demon Deacs
Not many teams in the nation have the kind of frontcourt North Carolina has. In their win over Wake Forest, Justin Jackson (6-9, 210) scored 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds and blocked two shots. Kennedy Meeks (6-10, 260) added 18 points and 11 rebounds. Isaiah Hicks chipped in with 16 points and five boards. Guard Joel Berry II added 18 points and seven assists on 7-of-12 shooting. UNC opened up with a 15-point lead and then had to hold on in the second half as they allowed 53 points. North Carolina shot 51.6 percent from the floor and 44.4 percent (8-18) from beyond the arc. They held Wake Forest to 43.1 percent shooting although they did make 11-of-27 from 3-point range (40.7%).
The Tar Heels average 89.3 points per game (6th) and 47.6 percent from the field. They allow 69.6 points per game (122nd) and 39.9 percent from the field. Jackson leads the team with 17.7 points per game, while Meeks leads in rebounds with 9.7.
College Basketball Trends:
Florida State is:
- 4-0 ATS last 4 overall.
- 6-1 ATS last 7 after an ATS win.
- 2-6 ATS last 8 after a SU win.
- Home team is 2-5 ATS last 7 in series.
This should be a hell of an ACC game. FSU is one of the few teams that can handle North Carolina’s size and speed. They are playing the best basketball of any Florida State team since they had Charlie Ward, Bob Sura and Sam Cassell.
