Utah State vs. San Diego State
NCAA Basketball: Saturday, January 14th, 10:00 pm EST
Line: San Diego State -9
Utah State heads to San Diego to take on the Aztecs on Saturday night. The Aggies are 8-8 overall and 2-3 in the Mountain West conference. The Aztecs are not the team of recent years, but they did get off the mat to post their first win of the conference season, beating San Jose State 76-61 on Tuesday night. The win raised their record to 9-7 overall and 1-3 in the Mountain West.
In somewhat of a surprise to me, the Aztecs have actually been the bettering covering team this year. The Aggies are 7-9 ATS overall and 2-3 on the road, while San Diego State is 9-6 ATS and 5-3 at home. The lines might be a little soft right now for the Aztecs and a good time to bet them.
Utah State loses to Wyoming
Utah State was 2-2 and headed to Wyoming with a chance to go above .500 in the Mountain West, but it wasn’t meant to be. The Cowboys held off the Aggies, winning 95-87. The Cowboys built an 18 point halftime lead but the Aggies fought there way back, outscoring Wyoming 48-38 in the second half. It wasn’t enough however.
Both teams shot 50% or better from the field, but the difference was from beyond the arc. The Aggies could only muster shooting eight of 23, while the Cowboys shot 13 of 28. That made all the difference. The Aggies also missed nine free throws which didn’t help either.
San Diego State gets a win
San Diego State grabbed their first win of the conference season by beating San Jose State, and I think it might be the first of many. They only play one top three conference team over their next seven games and it’s a very winnable game at home against Colorado State. It wouldn’t surprise me to see the Aztecs near the top of the standings in three weeks or so.
Their offense has definitely been a problem however. They are shooting only 42% from the field as a team, and a rather putrid 33% from beyond the arc. Steve Fisher’s teams have always been based more on defense and that is certainly true of this team. They will have to shoot better, however, if they hope to make a run in the Mountain West.
The Utah State Aggies are:
- 2-8 ATS in their last 10 games overall.
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up loss.
- 4-11 ATS in their last 15 Saturday games.
- 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
The San Diego State Aztecs are:
- (no trends available)
The fact that the Aztecs are over .500 when it comes to covering the spread shows me that the lines makers are making lines way too soft for the Aggies right now. They shouldn’t be over .500 ATS in a down year like this, and yet here we are. I think they will only get better and I trust Steve Fisher to figure it out. Let’s keep riding the Aztecs.
