Santa Clara vs. Pepperdine
NCAA Basketball: Saturday, January 14th, 8:00 pm EST
Line: Santa Clara -4
Santa Clara heads to Pepperdine to take on the Waves on Saturday night. It’s a battle of two teams who aren’t likely to finish in the upper echelon of the WCC, but the Broncos Jared Brownridge is fun to watch on a nightly basis. He had 20 points in their win over San Diego on Thursday night, hitting the go ahead bucket with a minute left. That improved the Broncos to 9-9 overall and 3-2 in conference. The Waves lost by five to Pacific on Thursday to drop to 5-12 overall and 1-4 in the WCC.
Santa Clara has been a pretty good team against the spread, going 9-8 so far this year and 3-4 away from home. Pepperdine has been horrible and a definite bet against. They are only 4-12 against the spread overall and are 3-5 at home versus the number.
Santa Clara pulls out hard fought victory
The Broncos dug down deep and went above .500 in conference by pulling out the win over San Diego on Thursday. The Broncos built a six point halftime lead and then had to hold off the Toreros numerous times in the second half. As usual, Jared Brownridge carried the Broncos. He had 20 points and hit the go ahead shot with a minute left. He hit five three pointers and led three Broncos in double digits.
The senior guard seems like he’s been around forever and he’s one of the few things that has made Santa Clara basketball exciting in recent years. He’s averaging 17.2 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.8 assists on the year and proved Thursday night just how important he is to the Broncos.
Waves lose a close one
Pepperdine doesn’t need to hold their head in their latest defeat, as it was actually one of the better games they have played recently. They lost by five at Pacific, but they showed some grit and were in the game until the final minute. Two Waves played great basketball as Chris Reyes had 20 points on nine of 15 shooting, and also pitched in seven rebounds and six assists.
Lamond Murray Jr. also had a big game, scoring 23 points on solid 10 for 20 shooting. He also helped out in other facets, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out three assists. Reyes and Murray have been their best players all season and Thursday night was no different. Unfortunately, it ended in another loss for Pepperdine.
College Hoops Trends:
The Santa Clara Broncos are:
- 5-2 ATS in their last 7 games vs. a team with a winning % below .400.
The Pepperdine Waves are:
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400.
- 0-5 ATS in their last 5 Saturday games.
- 0-4 ATS in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
Santa Clara is the better team, even on the road. Pepperdine has been terrible all year and have one of the worst records against the spread of any team in the nation. 4-12 is truly terrible. That’s not all as the trends listed above show. I like Santa Clara in a resounding road victory and expect a good game from Jared Brownridge. He responded to a bad game with a great one against San Diego and I think he continues to roll.
