Hofstra Pride (9-9 SU, 5-8-1 ATS, 9-5 O/U) vs. UNC Wilmington Seahawks (16-2 SU, 8-6 ATS, 8-6 O/U)

NCAAB: Saturday, January 14, 2017, Trask Coliseum, Wilmington, North Carolina, 7 pm ET

Spread: UNC Wilmington -14, Over/Under: 164

It’s a matchup in the Colonial Athletic Association down the east coast. The Hofstra Pride travel down the east coast as they battle the UNC Wilmington Seahawks Saturday night. Hofstra lost their fourth straight with a 96-80 road defeat to Elon Thursday night. UNC Wilmington won its fifth straight game by trashing William & Mary 101-77 at home Thursday night. The Seahawks won three of the last four meetings but it was Hofstra recording a 70-69 win in the last matchup here on February 25, 2016.

Hofstra Pride Seeks to Avoid Fifth Consecutive Defeat

Hofstra has hit the skids with four straight losses and fell back to the .500 mark on the year, not to mention 1-4 in conference play. The Pride proved to be no matchup for Elon, who rung up a truckload of points in the victory. Hofstra trailed by 16 at the half and failed to make up any ground in the second half to take the loss. The Pride shot 45.8 percent from the field but struggled from the perimeter as they were 8 of 34 from beyond the arc. Hofstra allowed Elon to knock down a blistering 57.9 percent from the field and 14 of 27 from three point range. Deron Powers had 21 points and eight assists in the loss to lead the Pride.

The Pride is above average on the offensive end of the floor, ranking 84th in the nation with 78.2 points per game. Hofstra stands 93rd in rebounding with 38.4 boards per contest and 192nd in assists with 13.5 dimes a night. The Pride is just tied for 278th in scoring defense as they allow 76.8 points per contest. Hofstra is shooting 44.3 percent from the floor as a team this year. The Pride is averaging nine three pointers a night on 37.5 percent shooting from beyond the arc. Eli Pemberton leads the team with 13.7 points per game. Brian Bernardi chips in 12.5 points per night, Deron Powers contributes 12.8 points plus 4.9 assists per contest and Justin Wright-Foreman posts 13.6 points per game. Rokas Gustys is a force down low with 8.5 points and 12.3 rebounds per contest. Ty Greer and Jamall Robinson are key secondary scoring pieces for the Pride.

UNC Wilmington Seahawks Look for Sixth Straight Win

UNC Wilmington has rolled over most of their competition this season with their lone defeats coming to Clemson and Middle Tennessee. The Seahawks trounced William & Mary at home in their last game and look to win their sixth straight here. UNC Wilmington wasn’t sharp defensively as they allowed the Tribe to shoot 53.2 percent from the floor. The Seahawks more than made up for it offensively as they shot 55.7 percent from the field and sank 11 of 30 three point attempts in the game. C.J. Bryce, Denzel Ingram and Chris Flemmings each had 18 points to lead UNC Wilmington in the win.

The Seahawks are an elite offensive unit as they enter this contest 11th in the nation in scoring. The team averages 87.6 points per contest. UNC-Wilmington is 223rd in the nation in rebounding with 35.6 boards per contest and 53rd with 16.4 assists per game. The Seahawks are a below average defensive team as far as prohibiting points. UNC-Wilmington is coming into the game 243rd by allowing 74.5 points per game. The team is shooting a blistering 49.7 percent from the floor on the year. The Seahawks are knocking down 9.2 triples a night while shooting 35.5 percent from beyond the arc. C.J. Bryce leads the team with 17.8 points plus 4.5 boards a game. Chris Flemmings contributes 16 points along with 5.6 rebounds a night while Devontae Cacok (13.8 points, 9.8 rebounds) and Denzel Ingram (15.4 points, 5.8 assists) also score in double figures. Jordon Talley, JaQuel Richmond and Ambrose Mosley each contribute better than 5.5 points a night for UNC Wilmington.

Trends:

Hofstra

  • Pride are 0-4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall
  • Pride are 0-5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. Colonial Athletic Association

UNC Wilmington

  • Seahawks are 5-1 ATS in their last 6 vs. Colonial Athletic Association
  • Seahawks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a favorite
  • Seahawks are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 games overall

Both teams have good offensive attacks but they have major issues on the defensive side of the floor. Hofstra had been playing decent but lost four straight coming into this one. Meanwhile, UNC Wilmington has won five in a row and is coming off a destruction of another offensively talented team in William & Mary. The Seahawks have better offensive weapons and solid interior presences that help them coast to the win over a fading Hofstra squad.

Pick: UNC Wilmington Seahawks -14
