East Carolina Pirates v. UConn Huskies at the XL Center in Hartford, Connecticut
Sunday, January 22nd, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. EST
Point Spread: UConn Huskies -10.5
The UConn Huskies are hosting the Pirates of East Carolina in this clash of American rivals. The Huskies have struggled this season. They’re just 7-11, and they’re just 2-4 in conference play. East Carolina hasn’t been much better. The Pirates are 9-10, and they’ve gone just 1-5 early on in their American slate. Which team will improve their conference record with a victory in Hartford on Sunday night?
East Carolina can’t stay with Cincinnati
The East Carolina Pirates gave the #22 Cincinnati Bearcats a game, but they ultimately lost in a 55-46 decision. The Pirates actually held a lead against the Bearcats, but Cincinnati’s superior talent took over. East Carolina had only two players reach double-digits in scoring. Elijah Hughes led all scorers with 18 points to go with 3 rebounds and 2 blocks. Jeremy Sheppard came off the bench to score 13 points.
East Carolina’s offense was absolutely atrocious in the loss to Cincinnati. The Pirates were abysmal from the field. They only made 25% of their field goal attempts. ECU was even worse from beyond the arc. The Pirates made just 17% of their three-point attempts. East Carolina is scoring the fewest points per game while also shooting the lowest percentage in the American this season. They’re averaging just 61.8 points per game on 39.6% shooting.
UConn falls to SMU
The UConn Huskies dropped their second straight on Thursday night, losing 69-49 to the Southern Methodist Mustangs. UConn really struggled against SMU, and they trailed by 29 points at one point in the game. Kentan Facey had a double-double for the Huskies. Facey finished the night with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and a block. The Vance Jackson led the Huskies in scoring. He put up 17 points against SMU.
UConn couldn’t seem to find their stroke in the loss to the Mustangs. The Huskies shot just 34% from the field. They also struggled to hold on to the ball. UConn had 16 turnovers against Southern Methodist. The number of turnovers was a little out of the ordinary for the Huskies. UConn is only averaging 12.7 turnovers per game. They’ll try to return to form as they host the Pirates in this one.
The UConn Huskies are:
- 6-2 ATS in their last 8 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
- 5-2 ATS in their last 7 Sunday games.
UConn’s the better team, and they won their last two home games by 15 and 14 points. The Huskies are holding visiting teams to just 57 points per game in their last seven at the XL Center. Meanwhile, the Pirates have struggled to win games on the road. ECU is 0-5 on the road this season, and they have been beaten by an average of 13.4 points in those games. I like UConn’s winning streak to continue at home as they blow out East Carolina. The Huskies cover on Sunday.
