Central Florida vs. Memphis
NCAA Basketball: Sunday, January 22nd, 4:00 pm EST
Line: Memphis -5
Central Florida heads to Memphis to take on the Tigers on Sunday afternoon in an American Conference matchup. The Knights are 5-1 overall and 14-4 on the year and have won six of seven games overall. Memphis is having a good year as well, are 4-2 in conference and are 14-5 overall. They defeated Houston in their latest game 70-67, their fifth win in six games.
Against the spread, the Knights have been one of the best team in the nation. They are 13-4 ATS overall, and 3-2 at home. They are obviously much better at home, but 3-2 isn’t bad. The Tigers are 10-8 overall and 7-6 at home. Both teams are good and there’s not too much advantage here.
Central Florida crushes South Florida
The team at the bottom of the American Conference standings had no chance against one of the top teams as Central Florida crushed their neighbors from the south, South Florida. The Knights raced off to a 12 point halftime lead and the Bulls only fell back further in the second half of the 86-64 blowout. The teams shot about the same from the field, but the big difference was from beyond the arc and from the free throw line.
The Bulls made only seven three pointers and five free throws, while Central Florida hit 14 three-pointers and 18 free throws. They outscored them by 21 from beyond the arc and by 13 from the charity stripe. Those made the difference.
Memphis defeats Houston
Memphis took down Houston 70-67 in a tight, well played overtime game on Thursday night. There were only nine points scored in all of overtime, with Memphis scoring six of them. It was a great time for their defense to show up and come up big. They held the Cougars to under 40% from the field and under 30% from the three point line. They also forced 14 turnovers.
On the offensive end, it was all about K.J. Lawson, who had an absolutely monster game. He finished with 28 points, 16 rebounds, five assists, and a steal. He shot 12 of 21 from the field and made half of his four three-pointers. It was a brilliant all around game.
The Central Florida Knights are:
- 2-5 ATS in their last 7 road games vs. a team with a home winning % of greater than .600.
- 3-8 ATS in their last 11 Sunday games.
- 2-6 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a winning home record.
The Memphis Tigers are:
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a winning road record.
This is a great battle with two very good American conference teams. It’s a tough game to call, but the trends seem to suggest the Tigers and I’m liking the home team as well. The Knights have struggled on the road with teams with winning records. I expect a close first half, and could see the Tigers pulling away late.
