Arizona State Sun Devils v. Southern California Trojans at the Galen Center in Los Angeles, California
Sunday, January 21st, 2017 at 8:30 p.m. EST
Point Spread: -8.5
The Southern Cal Trojans are hosting the Arizona State Sun Devils in the City of Angels on Sunday night. USC has had a nice season, but they’ve struggled to start their Pac-12 schedule. The Trojans are 16-4 on the season, but all four of their losses have come against conference opponents. Southern Cal is just 3-4 in conference play. Arizona State hasn’t been as successful this season. The Sun Devils are just 9-10, and they’ve gone 2-4 to start their Pac-12 slate. Which team will win this conference battle on Sunday?
Arizona State dominated by UCLA
The Arizona State Sun Devils were blown out by #3 UCLA in an embarrassing 102-80 loss. The Sun Devils trailed for the entire game, and they were already down by 15 points at intermission. Torian Graham actually had a nice game in the loss. Graham 26 points, and he made 6 threes against the Bruins. Obinna Oleka did his part with a double-double. Oleka finished the night with 10 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 steals, and a block.
Offense hasn’t been the problem for the Sun Devils. Arizona State is scoring 81.5 points per game this season. They’re averaging the third most points in the Pac-12. However, the Sun Devils are struggling on the defensive end. Arizona State has allowed more than 90 points seven times this season. The Sun Devils will need their defense to step up against USC in this one.
Slow start dooms Southern Cal
The Trojans of USC had a terrible start in their 73-66 loss to the #13 Arizona Wildcats. Southern Cal only managed 19 points in the first half, so they had a tough hill to climb in the second half. Elijah Stewart led the Trojans in scoring with 20 points to go with 4 rebounds, 4 blocks, and an assist. Chimezie Metu had a nice outing as well. He posted 11 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals, and a block in the loss.
Southern Cal’s offense didn’t have a good shooting night against Arizona. The Trojans made just 37% of their shots from the field. USC’s defense did have some great plays in the loss. They had 5 steals and 8 blocks. The Trojans lead the conference in steals. They are averaging nearly 7 steals per game this season. Additionally, Southern Cal is third in the Pac-12 in blocks. They’re blocking nearly 6 shots per game.
The Arizona State Sun Devils are:
- 2-7-1 ATS in their last 10 road games.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as a road underdog of 7.0-12.5.
- 3-13 ATS in their last 16 Sunday games.
- 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games as an underdog of 7.0-12.5.
The Southern Cal Trojans are:
- 5-1 ATS in their last 6 games following a straight up loss.
USC beat the Sun Devils by 10 last season in Los Angeles, and I think that they’ll win this one by double-digits as well. The Trojans are 11-2 at home this season, and they’ve won seven of those games by 10 points or more. Meanwhile, Arizona State has lost their last three road games. Those three losses have come by an average of 18 points. I like Southern Cal to blow out the Sun Devils and cover easily on Sunday night in Los Angeles.
