The Line: Oakland Golden Grizzlies -15.5. Total: 157.5

The Cleveland State Vikings have lost seven of their last eight games heading into a road date with the Oakland Golden Grizzlies at Athletics Center O’rena on Friday night. Cleveland State is coming off consecutive setbacks against Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Detroit. The Golden Grizzlies halted a three-game skid by defeating Youngstown State on Wednesday.

Rookie on the bench and the floor

Cleveland State head coach Dennis Felton is in his first season with the Vikings after getting the job last March. Felton is in the midst of his 12th year overall as a college basketball head coach, having spent five years at Western Kentucky and five-plus seasons at Georgia. During his time roaming the sidelines, he has picked up 188 wins, seven conference championships, and six trips to postseason tournaments (four NCAA berths).

The Vikings also feature a prominent newcomer on the court, as Tyree Appleby is averaging 11.4 points, 2.1 rebounds, 3.5 assists, and 1.5 steals per game. Appleby ranks sixth in the Horizon League in steals and assists, and he is the highest-scoring freshman in the conference (20th overall). The Jacksonville, Ark. native is a two-time Horizon League Freshman of the Week, having earned the award in back-to-back weeks last month. Appleby poured in a career-high 24 points at Western Michigan on Dec. 6, going 8-of-10 from the field. That marked the most points scored by a Cleveland State freshman since Rob Edwards in January of 2016.

Pouring in points

Oakland is coming off a 95-82 win over Youngstown State earlier this week. Five players scored in double-figures for the Golden Grizzlies, with Jalen Hayes delivering his Horizon League-leading eighth double-double of the season (20 points and 10 rebounds). Nick Daniels scored 16 points, going 6-for-9 from the floor and 4-for-6 from beyond the three-point. Daniels also dished out a career-high nine assists and committed only one turnover. Kendrick Nunn led all scorers with 26 points on 9-of-14 shooting and he went 6-of-10 from the three-point line to go along with five rebounds and four assists. Brailen Neely, who leads the conference in assists, finished with seven dimes and chipped in 11 points. Martez Walker added 13 points on 5-for-5 shooting from the charity stripe. Oakland is 6-0 this season when Daniels scores in double-figures.

The Golden Grizzlies began the season scoring more than 80 points in each of their first two contests and they have not looked back. They have surpassed the 80-point mark in three straight outings and they were one point away from that streak being four (lost to Wisconsin-Green Bay 80-79 on Dec. 30).

NCAAB Trends:

The Cleveland State Vikings are:

  • 4-1 Over in their last five overall
  • 4-1 Over in their last five road games
  • 4-1 Over in their last five games against the Horizon League

The Oakland Golden Grizzlies are:

  • 7-2 Over in their last nine overall
  • 6-0 Over in their last six home games
  • 5-1 Over in their last six games against teams with winning percentages under .400

Oakland is second in the Horizon League behind Detroit in scoring, averaging 81.3 points per game. Nunn is pouring in a whopping 25.7 points per game and the team still features three players averaging more than 19 points per game (Nunn included), even though he is scoring so much by himself. The over is 4-1 in the Vikings’ last five overall, 4-1 in their last five on the road, 4-1 in their last five on the road against opponents with home winning percentages over .600, 4-1 in their last five against the Horizon League, and 4-0 in their last four following a loss. It is also 7-2 in the Golden Grizzlies’ last nine overall, 6-0 in their last six at home, 5-1 in their last six against opponents with winning percentages under .400, and 5-1 in their last six at home against opponents with losing road records. Look for this one to go over the total.
