Youngstown State heads to Detroit Mercy on Friday night in a Horizon League battle. The Horizon League is one of the worst conferences in college basketball this year and that’s evidenced by the Penguins. They had lost nine straight games and had been 2-11 coming into conference play, and they have since gone 3-1 in the very watered down Horizon this year. They are in third place behind Wright State and Northern Kentucky.
Meanwhile, Detroit Mercy comes into Friday’s game at 5-13 overall and 1-4 in conference. It’s going to be a down year for them and I don’t see them even getting close to midpack in the Horizon this year. They have lost 11 of 12, however, their last game was a win, breaking the 11 game losing streak by beating Cleveland State 84-83.
Line: Detroit -4
Penguins finally lose
Youngstown State had lost nine straight entering the Horizon League, but they ran off three straight wins to kick things off, before losing to Oakland on Wednesday night. The game out of hand early and the Penguins couldn’t stop the Golden Grizzlies at all in the first half. Oakland put up 54 points and led by 18 and then coasted to a 95-82 win that wasn’t really that close.
On the bright side, the Penguins are still in second place and only one game out of first, although there are two teams tied at 4-0 in conference. They have been led this year by Cameron Morse and Bruan Hatfield who are both putting up 14.5 points per game. They are the only two averaging double digits and usually carry the load offensively.
Detroit finally wins
Detroit finally ended a very tough stretch, putting an 11 game losing streak to an end with a win over Cleveland State on Wednesday night. Corey Allen took the inbounds pass and went coast to coast to score the winning basket with a second left on the clock. It was quite the way to end an 11 game losing streak and it was the Titans 5th win of the year against 13 losses.
Allen was the best player on the court all game long. He made nine of 14 from the field and finished with 25 points. He also added eight boards and six assists and even added five turnovers. To say he stuffed the stat sheet would be an understatement. But the Titans can live with the turnovers as he ended the losing streak.
The Youngstown State Penguins are:
- 6-2 ATS in their last 8 road games vs. a team with a losing home record.
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. Horizon League.
The Detroit Mercy Titans are:
- 2-7 ATS in their last 9 Friday games.
- 1-3-1 ATS in their last 5 home games vs. a team with a losing road record.
Detroit Mercy has won one game in their last 12 and it was by a single point. I think the Penguins take care of them easily on Friday.
