College Basketball action on Saturday afternoon and a pair of teams from Conference U.S.A will square off as the Charlotte 49ers grapple with the Florida Atlantic Owls at FAU Arena in Boca Raton, Florida.
The 49ers enter this game off a 69-66 loss to FIU on the road to fall to 0-3 within Conference U.S.A, while the Owls enter this contest off an 80-73 home win over Old Dominion to move to 2-1 in league play.
The Offense Continues To Struggle
The Charlotte 49ers are off to a miserable 3-11 start and you can blame their offense for that. They enter this game off a 69-66 road loss to FIU and have now averaged just 62.8 ppg in their last five games. We do note that they play at one of the slowest paces in the nation, but still, this is a bad offensive team. The 49ers shot 42.3% from the field overall and they were 5/12 (41.7%) from long range, but they also missed eight free throws and committed 20 turnovers. Thew missed free throws and turnovers are costly in a three-point game. The defense was not bad as they held the Golden Panthers to just 37.3% shooting overall and 7/21 (33.3%) from long range. With little offense, the defense will have to continue to play well. Leading their attack in the game was Jon Davis (21.6 ppg), who had 24 points, while Brandon Younger (6.3 ppg) had 16 points. The 49ers have lost six in a row and they are currently ranked 309th by KenPom while taking on the 136th toughest schedule.

The 49ers enter this game ranked 349th in the nation in scoring at 59.9 ppg, while also ranking 319th in shooting (40.9%), 330th in three-point shooting (29.5%) and 11th in free throw shooting (76.9%). On defense, they are 125th in points allowed, giving up 69.4 ppg, while also ranking 194th in defensive FG% (43.6%) and 208th in three-point defense (34.3%).
Owls Look For Three-Game Win Streak
The Florida Atlantic Owls have gotten off to a much better start than the 49ers have as they are currently 11-5 overall and 2-1 in league play. KenPom has them rated at 191st in the nation and they have taken on the 199th rated schedule. The Owls are a team to watch in Conference U.S.A and they will be going for their 3rd straight win ag=fter dropping their conference opener against UAB. The Owls have followed that loss up with a road win over MTSU and a home win over ODU. FAU won the game against ODU by a score of 80-73 and leading their attack was Xavian Stapleton (12.0 ppg), who scored 23 points, while Anthony Adger (16.0 ppg) and Richardson Maitre (4.7 ppg) each had 13. The Owls have not been a good shooting team this year, but that was not the case against ODU as they hit 51.0% of their shots from the field overall, including 57.1% (12/21) from downtown. They hope the hot shooting continues in this one. The defense allowed 47.6% shooting overall in the win but just 29.6% (8/27) from long range.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
The 49ers can play some defense, but I feel that they do not have enough offenses to keep this one close. FAU has averaged 77.7 ppg at home, while the 49ers have put up just 60.5 ppg on the road and we note that Charlotte has been outscored by 13.7 ppg away from home so far. Look for the Owls to win this one by around 13 points.
Prediction: Florida Atlantic -9
Full-Game Total Pick
I love the Under in this game. The Owls have struggled to score of late as they have averaged 64.2 ppg over their last five games, while the 49ers have put up 62.8 ppg over the same stretch and they have averaged just 60.5 ppg on the road. both teams have played good defense this year and the pace will be slow. 69-56 sounds about right for this one.
Prediction: Under 128
