Charleston hosts Delaware on Saturday in a key CAA battle. The Cougars are 13-4 but have struggled, losing two straight. The Hens are red-hot, having won four straight to open at 4-1 in the CAA.

Nothing beats winning

Delaware has struggled the last few seasons. Injuries have been part of the problem and they also lost last year’s top player Ryan Daly, to transfer (St. Joe’s). But the Blue Hens are beginning to come together, winning four straight, including a solid 82-69 road win over UNCW on Thursday night. They shot 51.9 percent from the floor and 15-of-35 (42.9%) from beyond the arc. Freshman guard Ithiel Horton led the way with a career-high  31 points. Forward Eric Carter added 14 points, 14 rebounds and four assists for the Hens, who had 16 assists and eight turnovers.

Carter leads the Hens with 17.6 points per game and 10.5 rebounds on 61.2 percent shooting. Delaware is a pretty balanced team, averaging 73.5 points per game on 46.8 percent shooting (39% 3pt). They are allowing 71.1 points per game on 42.5 percent shooting (35.4% 3pt).

Cougars trending in the wrong direction

The College of Charleston had a 10-game winning streak after beating Towson on Jan. 3, 67-55. They followed that with a loss at JMU on the road, 69-58 as a 9-point favorite. They returned home on Thursday, blew a double-digit lead in the second half and fell to Drexel, 79-78. Troy Harper hit three free throws with 1.1 seconds left to lead the Dragons over the Cougars, who lost at home for the first time since Feb. 23, 2017. Their 22-game home winning streak ranked second in the nation to Houston.

The Cougars shot 55.4 percent from the floor but just 9-of-16 from the line. The Dragons shot 15-of-20 from the line and 47.5 percent from the floor. Guard Grant Riller lead the Cougars with 18 points on 7-of-15 shooting, while Brevin Galloway added 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. Star big man Jarell Brantley struggled with 10 points, four turnovers and three rebounds in 33 minutes.

Brantley and Riller are one of the best duos in the nation. Brantley averages 19.4 points and 7.8 rebounds on 54 percent shooting (36.5% 3pt). Riller leads in scoring with 22 points per game and 4.5 assists. On the season, the Cougars average 73.5 points per game on 47 percent shooting (31.1% 3pt). They allow 67.4 points per game on 44.4 percent shooting (32.8% 3pt).

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

Charleston is going to bounce back in this one; the only question is whether they cover. The trends don’t support it but Charleston has to be embarrassed from blowing a 13-point lead at home to Drexel and blowing the 22-game homecourt winning streak. It’s not a good spot for the Hens to win but a loss here isn’t a bad one.

Prediction: Charleston

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Charleston is 5-0 Over their last 5 home games. The Cougars have two great scorers and you can’t double both. Delaware is shooting the ball extremely well, especially from 3-point range. I just don’t see the Blue Hens being able to hang with Riller and Brantley. Expect a high-scoring game from TD Arena.
