Northeastern travels to Williamsburg to take on William & Mary on Saturday in CAA action from Kaplan Arena. Northeastern is 2-2 in the CAA after beating Elon in overtime, 81-70 on Thursday. W&M is coming off a 93-90 overtime loss to first-place Hofstra.

Huskies break streak

It wasn’t pretty but Northeastern was able to break a two-game losing streak with an overtime win over Elon on the road. Guard Vasa Pusica scored 19 points and dished out seven assists in 40 minutes to lead the way for the Huskies. The Huskies blew a 47-31 lead in the second half and had to take control back in overtime. They shot 40 percent from the field and held the Phoenix so 39.3 percent shooting. They also outrebounded Elon by 10, led by 10 from Donnell Gresham Jr.

Pusica leads the Huskies with 15.7 points per game and 4.7 assists in 10 games (he was injured early on). Jordan Roland contributes 15.1 points, though he came off the bench in the last game. The offense averages 74.3 points per game on 47.8 percent shooting (38.2% 3pt). They allow 73.8 points per game on 47 percent shooting (36.5% 3pt) and that’s where the problem lies with Northeastern this season.

Defense still an issue for W&M

William & Mary played one of their best games of the season last Saturday, crushing Drexel on the road, 84-66. That same Drexel team went on to upset Charleston on the road on Thursday night. That same night, the Tribe played another strong game but couldn’t slow down Hofstra, falling in three overtimes by one. There were nine lead changes and 18 ties in what will go down as the top game of the CAA this season to this point. In the first overtime, W&M took a 72-69 lead and didn’t score again until Nathan Knight knocked down a three-pointer with less than a second left.

Knight was outstanding with 31 points, 10 rebounds and five assists on 12-of-19 shooting in 44 minutes. Justin Pierce had 24 points and 15 rebounds in 52 minutes. The Tribe shot 45.3 percent from the floor and outrebounded the Pride by six, but they also turned it over 18 times. Defensively, they did a solid job, holding Hofstra to 40.2 percent shooting but they couldn’t shut down guard Justin Wright-Foreman, who scored 37 points in 55 minutes. Knight leads the Tribe with 19.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 3.2 assists per game. The defense is their biggest Achilles’ heel, that allows 77.5 points per game on 45.8 percent shooting (37.2% 3pt). For a William & Mary team, they are struggling from the 3-point line, making just 33.6 percent.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

This is a tough one because the Huskies generally do not play well against William & Mary, but the Tribe are coming off a gruelling 3-overtime game. Northeastern is coming off a one-overtime game but with Pusica, they have the best player on the floor. Ultimately, the Huskies have the better all-around team and play better defense.

Prediction: Northeastern

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

I like the total a little more because both teams are coming off overtime games. They should be fatigued, especially in the second half when their legs are gone. William & Mary is 6-2 Under their last 8 overall.

Prediction: Under
