It’s a West Coast Conference tilt between a pair of schools from the state of California on the college hoops hardwood. The Pepperdine Waves are on the road as they travel to face the San Diego Toreros Saturday afternoon. Pepperdine fell 67-64 on the road at Santa Clara Thursday night in their last contest. San Diego comes in off a 73-64 home win over Pacific last Saturday in their previous contest. The Waves lead the all-time series 52-38 but the Toreros took both meetings last season, including a 68-66 road win in the last matchup on February 8, 2018.

Pepperdine Waves Look to Even Conference Mark

Pepperdine went down to the wire for the second straight game but came up a couple points short. The Waves try to even their overall and conference records in this contest with a win. Pepperdine led by eight at the half and battled back from six down with 1:39 to play in the game to tie the score at 64 with eight seconds to go. Unfortunately for the Waves, they committed a foul on a three point attempt with 1.9 seconds to play. The Broncos hit all three free throws and the Waves went down in defeat. Pepperdine shot 40 percent from the floor, including 11 of 23 from three point range, and lost the rebounding battle 37-27. Kessler Edwards and Colbey Ross (10 assists) each had 13 points to lead the Waves in the loss.

The Waves are averaging 78.1 points per game so far this season. Pepperdine pulls down 32.9 rebounds per contest while they dish out 15.1 assists per game. The Waves are below average on the defensive end of the floor, ranking 235th in the nation as they give up 73.5 points per game on the year. Colbey Ross leads the team with 18.5 points plus 7.4 assists per game this season. Kameron Edwards (15.1 points, 6.3 rebounds), Eric Cooper Jr. (12 points), Darnell Dunn (10.4 points), Jade’ Smith (10 points, 6.6 rebounds) and Kessler Edwards (10.4 points) each put up double figures on the year. Victor Ohia Obioha and Darryl Polk Jr. each average better than 3.5 points a game for the Waves. Pepperdine shoots 44.4 percent from the floor as a team on the year. The Waves are hitting nine threes a game as they shoot 37.1 percent from beyond the arc. Pepperdine is slightly above average this season at the stripe, posting a 74 percent mark at the free throw line.

San Diego Toreros Go for Second Straight WCC Win

San Diego bounced back from a loss to Santa Clara to open their league slate by downing a cold shooting Pacific team. The Toreros now go for a second straight conference win to get on the positive side of the .500 mark in the WCC here. San Diego led by six at the half but, after giving up the first basket of the second half, countered with a 16-0 run as they held Pacific scoreless for 6:28. The Toreros withstood the Tigers’ attempts to rally and got the win. San Diego shot 47.1 percent from the field and hit nine of 22 three point attempts in the contest while limiting Pacific to 38.2 percent shooting from the floor. Isaiah Piniero led the Toreros with 24 points and 11 rebounds in the victory.

The Toreros are putting up an average of 76.1 points per game in the early going this season. San Diego pulls down an average of 34.8 rebounds a game while dishing out 16.3 assists a night. The Toreros have been sharp defensively as they enter the contest ranked 96th in the nation in scoring defense by allowing 67.9 points a night. Isaiah Piniero leads the team with 20.1 points plus 8.9 rebounds a contest. Olin Carter III puts up 16.8 points a night while Isaiah Wright is good for 13.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and five assists a contest. Yauhen Massalski, Tyler Williams, Alex Floresca and Finn Sullivan are important role players for the Toreros. San Diego shoots 47.9 percent from the field as a team this season. The Toreros knock down 8.1 triples a night while sinking 35.8 percent from beyond the arc. San Diego is shooting 74.8 percent from the charity stripe as a team.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

San Diego is playing good basketball right now and they are terrific at home on the season. The Toreros are 9-0 at home on the year and they’re facing a Pepperdine team that has sputtered on the road. The Waves are a dismal 0-6 on the road this year and have found ways to lose close games. Pepperdine doesn’t have the experience to come up with the clutch plays late as we’ve seen in the last couple games. Look for San Diego to come up with the win in this contest.

Prediction: San Diego Toreros -9

Full-Game Total Pick

The Toreros are well above average on the defensive end of the floor and they have some good offensive weapons to work with on that end. Pepperdine has struggled on the defensive end and they have problems in close games. The Waves still have work to do on the defensive end of the floor and their inability to close games out on the road has been a problem for them this season. Can Pepperdine find a way to come up with a win on the road or will San Diego maintain their perfect home mark this season?

The under is 5-0 in the Waves’ last 5 road games, 4-0 in their last 4 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600, 4-0 in their last 4 Saturday games and 4-0 in their last four West Coast Conference games. San Diego has seen the under go 4-0 in their last 4 home games vs. a team with a losing road record, 6-1 in their last 7 home games vs. a team with a road winning % of less than .400 and 4-1 in their last five at home. The Toreros do a solid job on the defensive end and keep this one under the number.

Prediction: Under 146.5
