Texas State faces Appalachian State on Saturday in North Carolina in Sun Belt Conference action. Texas State is 2-1 in the league, while Appy State is 0-3.

Bobcats squeak by Coastal Carolina

Alex Peacock scored 13 points and Nijal Pearson added 12 to lead Texas State over Coastal Carolina, 65-61 on Thursday from South Carolina. The Bobcats won with their defense, which held the Chanticleers to just 39.6 percent shooting and 3-of-19 from beyond the arc. Texas State struggled on the boards, getting outrebounded by five and shot just 6-of-12 from the line. The Bobcats did shoot 44.6 percent from the field and 9-of-24 (37.5%) from beyond the arc.

Pearson leads the Bobcats in scoring with 17.8 points per game, while Peacock leads in rebounds with 7.2rpg. Texas State averages 75.8 points per game on 46.9 percent shooting (36.1% 3pt). They allow just 61.3 points per game to rank 16th in the nation. They also rank 15th in field goal percentage defense (38.3%) and 21st in three-point defense (28.6%). The Bobcats outrebound opponents by an average of 9.6 per game.

Mountaineers streaking the wrong way

Appalachian State has now lost four straight and six of their last seven games. In their latest defeat, they fell at home to UT Arlington on Thursday, 82-72. Isaac Johnson and Ronshad Shabazz scored 16 points apiece to lead the Mountaineers, who shot just 39.7 percent from the field. They were also outrebounded by 13 and shot just 5-of-22 from beyond the arc (22.7%). The Mavericks shot 48.3 percent from the floor and 9-of-20 from three-point range. The Mountaineers led by four at the half but could hold onto the lead.

“Not really much to say,” Coach Jim Fox said as he sat down for his post game news conference. “We just really struggled to make shots in the first half, and then we came out (in the second half) and got two layups we missed.

“… We’re dealing with some tough times right now, and we got to be able to fight through it.”

Shabazz leads Appy State in scoring with 19.8 points per game, while Johnson leads in rebound (8.6) and field goal percentage (51.7%). The offense is averaging a solid 81.9 points per game on 46 percent shooting (35.5% 3pt). The defense is allowing 79.3 points per game (322nd) on 46 percent shooting (35.9% 3pt).

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

Appy State has too much talent to be this bad. They’ve done well against Texas State in the past in terms of covering. That’s all I’m asking here. Can they cover this game at home against a strong Texas State team? Absolutely. Texas State barely covered as a road favorite in their game against Coastal Carolina, where they won by just four on the road. They did it with defense because their offense wasn’t overwhelming.

Prediction: Appy State

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Even though Appy State is averaging a ton of points and giving up a lot, this will go under. Texas State is 4-1 Under their last 5 road games. Appy State is 4-0-1 Under their last 5 against Texas State. I think Texas State controls this tempo some and it goes well under because the Bobcats play very good defense.

Prediction: Under
