Towson takes on James Madison on Saturday after the Dukes upset Charleston last Saturday, 69-58 at home. They haven’t played a game since then, while the Tigers fell to Cornell at home by 12 in a non-conference battle on Wednesday.

Tigers are reeling

Towson came into this season having to rebuild most of their roster and it has shown in the first two months of action. Towson has lost four straight games, including their last three conference contests to start 5-11 and 1-3 in the CAA. With no conference game available, they played a non-conference matchup against Cornell from the Ivy League and got crushed, 86-74. Big Red star guard Matt Morgan set a career-high with 38 points on 13-of-19 shooting (9-14 3pt) to dominate the action.

Towson allowed Cornell to shoot 52.5 percent from the field and 13-of-30 (43.3%) from beyond the arc. The Tigers couldn’t keep up offensively as they shot 42.3 percent from the field and shot 9-of-27 (33.3%) from beyond the arc. Tobias Howard led the Tigers with 15 points and seven assists,s while leading scorer Brian Fobbs was held to 12 points and six rebounds on 5-of-20 shooting (2-11 3pt).

Fobbs, a junior college transfer, still leads the team in scoring with 15.6 points per game, while Howard adds 9.9 points and 2.9 assists on 33.5 percent shooting (36% 3pt).

Dukes were barking

James Madison came into their game against Charleston with five straight losses, coming off an 86-83 defeat in overtime at home to UNCW on Jan. 3. The Cougars had won 10 straight games and the Dukes were looking for their first conference win. JMU took the game and held Charleston to just 58 points, which was the lowest for a Dukes’ opponent since Feb. 11, 2017. Darius Banks led the way for James Madison with 21 points and seven rebounds. Matt Lewis and Stuckey Mosley added 13 points apiece. The Dukes shot 54.5 percent from the floor and 10-of-19 (52.6%) from beyond the arc. They held a very good Cougars team to just 39.8 percent shooting and 4-of-18 (22.2%) from 3-point range. They committed 14 turnovers, but forced 13.

Mosley leads the Dukes in scoring with 16.4 points per game, while Dwight Wilson leads in rebounds (8.1rpg) and field goal percentage (58.1%). JMU is averaging just 70.1 points per game (272nd) on 43.3 percent shooting (35.7% 3pt). They allow 70.8 points per game on 43.7 percent shooting (32.9% 3pt). They are solid on the boards, outrebounding teams by a +4.8 margin. That will be important against a strong rebounding team in Towson.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet
Rating:

Towson is awful right now and they are down to nine players due to injuries and transfers. That could be eight if Alex Thomas (undisclosed) misses this game. They might not even play this one due to the pending snow. But if they do, the Dukes roll here against a bad and decimated club.

Prediction: James Madison

Full-Game Total Pick
Rating:

Towson can’t play too fast a pace due to their lack of numbers. They can’t keep up with the Dukes, so they’ll have to slow this one down. Even so, it won’t matter because they will be lucky to score over 60 points. Th eDukes are 11-4 Under their last 15 after a SU win. Towson is 6-1 Under their last 7 games.
