Texas-Arlington at Coastal Carolina

When and Where: Saturday, Jan. 12, HTC Center, Conway, S.C., 2 p.m. EST.

Zac Cuthbertson and Coastal Carolina look to get back to .500 in Sun Belt Conference play on Saturday when the Chanticleers host Texas-Arlington.

Mavericks seek rare back-to-back wins

Texas-Arlington (5-11, 1-2 Sun Belt) is looking to win back-to-back games for the first time since opening the season 2-0 after recording an 82-72 victory at Appalachian State on Thursday night.

Brian Warren scored 20 points while David Azore added 16 and 11 rebounds for his first double-double for the Mavericks, who posted their highest point total against a Division I opponent and set season bests in shooting (48.3 percent) and assists (17).

The Mavericks also did it on the defensive end, limiting the Mountaineers to 39.7 percent shooting for the game while outrebounding them 43-27 and overturning a 10-point halftime deficit. Texas-Arlington snapped a three-game skid and improved to 2-7 on the road.

“That was a tough, gritty win by our guys,” coach Chris Ogden told UTA’s official website. “We got some great shots that fell, protected the ball and got to the free-throw line late in the game and knocked them down. I’m proud of our guys – we had several different guys step up and make plays which contributed to the win.”

Warren is averaging a team-high 14.1 points while Edric DennisΒ is second at 13.2 points per game. The offense, though, has been inconsistent as Texas-Arlington is shooting just 38.8 percent on the season and 29.0 percent from 3-point range on the road.

Chanticleers out to fix shooting woes after home loss

Coastal Carolina (7-8, 1-2) is trying to avoid its first three-game skid of the season following a 65-61 home loss to Texas State on Thursday night. The Chanticleers shot a season-low 15 percent (3 for 20) from 3-point range, and their overall mark of 38 percent was their second worst on the season.

Cuthbertson is the only player in double figures for Coastal Carolina at 19.1 points per game, good for sixth in the Sun Belt. Coach Cliff Ellis, though, has surrounded the 6-foot-7 swingman with three good perimeter shooters in Tre Brown, David Kralj, and Tyrell Gumbs-Frater, who have combined for 67 of the team’s 121 3-pointers.

The Chanticleers are shooting 38.9 percent from beyond the arc, ranking third in the conference, and their 76.3 points per game are seventh. Coastal had averaged 80.8 points and won all of its previous four home games before Thursday night’s setback.

The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.

Full-Game Side Bet

The Chanticleers had shot 50 percent or better in their first three home games before tailing off in the last two contests. But as the saying goes, “Shoot your way into a slump, shoot your way out of a slump.”

Coastal Carolina has too many shooters to go through a prolonged funk on the perimeter, which makes Cuthbertson all the more effective. Texas-Arlington’s offensive output feels like an outlier given its shooting percentage this season, and the hedge is Coastal Carolina will bring the Mavericks back to earth.

Prediction: Pick: Coastal Carolina -6

Full-Game Total Pick

This is a confidence pick in the Mavericks not shooting lights out — by their standards — for a second straight road game. Neither team is very good defensively, but it seems unlikely Texas-Arlington will get above 70 for just the fourth time versus a Division I opponent this season.

This line has spiked 3.5 points higher to 142.5 in the overnight, and with it being difficult to have faith in either team — but especially Texas-Arlington — to break out offensively, the under feels like a stronger play than originally stated.

Prediction: Pick: UNDER 142.5 points

Half-Time Side Pick

Just because you play a killer road schedule does not make you better on the road come conference play. The Mavericks have led at halftime just once on their travails, owning a five-point lead at North Texas in a game they eventually lost.

Texas-Arlington has trailed by five or more points in five of its nine games, and while Coastal Carolina was down nine at intermission versus Texas State, the hedge is the Chanticleers bounce back here.

Prediction: Pick: Coastal Carolina -3

Half-Time Total Bet

The Mavericks have cleared 67 points just once in their nine road games and have been held to 60 or fewer in four of them. The Chanticleers are not an offensive juggernaut by any stretch of the imagination, but the bigger point is this is not the Texas-Arlington team of recent seasons. The under should hit here.

Prediction: Pick: UNDER 67 points
