East Carolina's Winning Streak Ends in Loss to Tulsa

The East Carolina Pirates enter this tough matchup on a losing note. They were 2.5 point underdogs in an awful 65-49 home loss to Tulsa in their latest bout. The Pirates had won two straight games prior to that defeat and stand at a respectable 2-2 in AAC play this season. East Carolina leans on its defense to stay in games.

Look out for Jayden Gardner in this game. The sophomore forward is an outstanding talent and has reached 20 points, 11 times this season. Gardner scored 20 points in a recent win against SMU and features an average of 21.2 PPG and 9.1 RPG. Tyrie Jackson has shot below 43% in four straight games. The junior guard went 0 for 12 from beyond the arc in Wednesday’s loss and holds an average of 9.3 points on 38% shooting. Brandon Suggs has only netted a combined 12 points in his last two contests. The freshman forward stands third in team scoring with 9.8 PPG and 3.8 RPG.

The Pirates are placed down at 240th in DI in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and are 0-3 in their three true road games. East Carolina is scoring an average of 69.7 points, ranking them 228th in the country. They are allowing an average of 70.5 points, positioning them 215th in DI.

Cincinnati Scores Season-Low 49 Points

The Cincinnati Bearcats will seek to even their AAC record to 3-3 in this one. The Bearcats had a two-game winning streak snapped in a rough 60-49 road loss to #22 Memphis on Thursday night in a game that had Cincinnati tagged as a four-point dog. The Bearcats defense is their top strength.

Jarron Cumberland has reached 19 points in two out of his last three games. The senior guard is playing well, connecting on at least 50% of his field goals in four out of his last five games and owns an average of 13.7 PPG. Chris Vogt is having an outstanding season and is contributing in the defensive end as well. The junior center features an average of 13.2 PPG on a stellar 68.8% field goal percentage to go with 6.6 RPG. Keith Williams scored 12 points in Wednesday’s defeat. The junior guard is currently averaging 12.4 points on 40% shooting.

The Bearcats are ranked 48th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and feature a 7-1 home record. Cincinnati is not a high scoring team and they are only averaging 71.6 points, placing them 179th overall. They are limiting opponents to 65.6 points, good for 89th in DI.

I am taking the points with the Pirates in this one. The Pirates have been very competitive in conference play where they feature a 2-2 record. They were underdogs against USF and SMU and came away with the outright win in both contests. The Pirates are containing their opponents, allowing 68 or fewer points in three straight games.

Furthermore, the Bearcats are not quite as threatening as season’s past and have only scored 68 and 49 points respectively in their last two games. Cincinnati also has a few bad losses this season. They lost to Tulane by a 76-71 score earlier in AAC play and have only won two out of their last four games overall.

Prediction: East Carolina

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I expect a defensive battle. East Carolina is a team that relies on its defense and they also play at a slower pace. They have only averaged 65.6 possessions per game in their last three games. The Pirates are also well below average offensively and are only shooting 42.2%. The under is 4-1 in the Pirates’ last five games as an underdog.

In addition, the Bearcats are an outstanding defensive team that should be able to limit the Pirates’ scoring. They have allowed an average of only 52.7 points in their last three games. The under is 5-1 in the Bearcats’ last six games overall.

Prediction: Under

Full-Game Prop Bet

Rating:

The under on the Cincinnati team total offered on PointsBet is a recommended option. The Bearcats were just held to 49 points on 30% shooting in Thursday’s loss. The Pirates are playing solid defense right now. They held their last three opponents to a field goal percentage of 43% or lower. They limited USF to 59 points and a potent SMU team to only 69 points in that span.

Prediction: Cincinnati Team Total Under

Half-Time Total Bet

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I expect a low scoring first half. Both teams are especially having trouble generating significant offense in the first half. The Bearcats have only averaged 24 points in the opening half in their last three games. The Pirates have been slightly more productive but are still only posting 29.3 points in the first half over their last three.
