Saturday afternoon college hoops action features a Horizon League battle between the Illinois-Chicago Flames and the Detroit Mercy Titans. This series has been one-sided in recent years as the Flames have won the previous six meetings including a pair of matches last season. Illinois-Chicago blew out Oakland while the Titans took down IUPUI last time these teams took the court. Tip-off is set for approximately 1:00 PM ET from the Calihan Hall on the campus of Detroit Mercy for this showdown.

Flames Fly Past Previous Opponent

Illinois-Chicago extended their win streak to three games with a convincing 80-50 beating of Oakland. This has been the perfect turn-around after a tough four-game losing skid, and moves them to 4-4 in Horizon play. The Flames have yet to register either a quad-1 or a quad-2 win so far this season. Five of their 12 defeats were qualified as quad-3 losses while four more were listed as quad-4 losses.

Tarkus Ferguson leads the Illinois-Chicago offense with 14.6 points and 5.2 assists per game. Marcus Ottey averages 10.8 points and Godwin Boahen adds 10.5 points a night as well. The Flames snag 35.5 rebounds per contest and they shoot 43.4% from the floor with 34.2% from deep. They commit 16.1 turnovers an outing and shoot 67.9% from the free throw line. Kenpom lists Illinois-Chicago as the 224th best team in the country while their NET ranking is 248th and their RPI ranking is 262nd.

Mercy Makes Momentum With Win

Detroit Mercy took advantage of an easy opponent as they defeated IUPUI 76-64 this previous Thursday. Things appear as they may improve as the team has now won two of their last three, and they sit at 3-5 in conference play. The Titans have yet to pick up either a quad-1 or a quad-2 win to date this campaign. Six of their 16 defeats were registered as quad-3 losses while five more were listed as quad-4 losses.

Antoine Davis leads the Detroit Mercy attack with 23.8 points and 4.5 assists per contest. Justin Miller contributes ten points and Marquis Moore puts up 7.5 points an outing as well. The Titans grab 36.6 rebounds per game and they shoot 38.1% from the floor with 32.3% from three. They commit 13.9 turnovers a night and convert on 79.1% of their free throw attempts. Kenpom lists Detroit Mercy as the 279th best team in the nation while their NET ranking is 288th and their RPI ranking is 310th.

Insiders Status:

I am playing the Flames in this Saturday afternoon showdown. Illinois-Chicago has struggled with turnovers some this season, but this Detroit Mercy defense isn't all that good and they only average six steals per game. The Titans offense has been very spotty as well, and they come into this contest only shoot 38.1% from the floor while the Flames shoot 43.4% as a team. Detroit Mercy is allowing an average 77.2 points an outing defensively while Illinois-Chicago is only giving up an average of 70.9 points per game themselves. The Flames have dominated this series between these two as they have won the previous six meetings as well as seven of the last ten. I can see no reason why they shouldn't extend their winning streak to four on the road in this Horizon League showdown.

Prediction: Illinois-Chicago Flames +1

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

The under in this contest is a must-play for today's card. Both of these teams may play faster pace than average as the Flames rank 144th with 72.2 possessions a game and the Titans rank 105th with 72.8 possessions an outing themselves, but I don't see that helping their scoring much. These teams haven't played well offensively for the most part as they only score a combined average of 136.1 points per contest. Illinois-Chicago only shoots 43.4% from the floor while Detroit Mercy only shoots 38.1% themselves, and neither are terrific three point shooting teams either. These two have played to the under in 25 of their 41 combined contests this season as well as eight of the last ten in this series. I see no reason why those trends won't continue into this battle as both of these teams are less than spectacular offensively.

Prediction: Under 142
