Drexel Dragons vs. Hofstra Pride

NBA: Saturday, January 25, Mack Sports Complex, Hempstead, New York, 4:00 PM ET

The Colonial Athletic Association showdown from Mack Sports Complex will see the Drexel Dragons take on the Hofstra Pride for the first time this season. Hofstra has own Drexel over the last few years, winning 10 of their previous 11 encounters overall including the last five meetings in Hempstead.

The Dragons (12-9; 9-11 ATS) and Pride (14-7; 13-7 ATS) are tied at the third spot of the CAA standings, as both teams are 5-3 in the conference play. Drexel will try to avoid its second straight loss, while Hofstra will look to halt a two-game slide.

The Dragons were blown away in Boston

Drexel is coming off a heavy 85-52 defeat at the Northeastern Huskies this past Thursday. The Dragons will try to forget this clash as soon as possible. They shot only 32.7% from the field and made ten turnovers more than assists (17-7). Also, the Dragons allowed their opponents to make 55.2% of their field goals and 52.9% of their 3-pointers. James Butler led the way for Drexel with 16 points and eight rebounds, while Coletrane Washington added 11 points off the bench. Drexel put an end to its three-game winning streak.

The Dragons are No. 211 at the NCAA NET Rankings and No. 218 at the latest KenPom Rankings. They score 99.3 points per 100 possessions (219th in the country) on 43.6% shooting from the field (181st), allowing 103.9 points in a return (215th) on 44.0% shooting from the field (240th). Sophomore guard Camren Wynter averages 15.1 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game, and he’s the Dragons’ best player this season. Junior forward James Butler tallies 12.6 points and 11.8 rebounds per contest, while senior guard Zach Walton adds 11.9 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

The Pride lost the dramatic battle with the Blue Hens

Hofstra is coming off a 73-71 home loss to the Delaware Blue Hens this past Thursday. The Pride blew a 10-point first-half lead and lost the game thanks to Kevin Anderson’s layup with just 0.3 seconds left on the clock. They shot just 36.4% from the field and 29.4% from beyond the arc while making 12 assists and eight turnovers. Desure Buie led the way for the Pride, accounting for 19 points and six assists, while Isaac Kante added 16 points and nine rebounds. Hofstra suffered its second straight loss for the first time this season.

The Pride are No. 161 at the NCAA NET Rankings and No. 154 at the latest KenPom Rankings. They score 104.8 points per 100 possessions (112th in the country) on 44.1% shooting from the field (160th), surrendering 103.7 points in a return (211th) on 44.6% shooting from the field (267th). Senior guard Desure Buie averages 18.7 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 5.3 assists per game. Another senior Eli Pemberton is posting 15.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per contest, while junior forward Isaac Kante is adding 10.4 points and 7.4 rebounds per game.

Best Bets for this Game

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

Hofstra is on a two-game slide for the first time this season, and the clash against the Drexel Dragons seems like a perfect opportunity for the Pride to get back on the winning path. The Pride have dominated the Dragons lately and are undefeated in five straight home encounters with Drexel. Hofstra has five guys who average points in double figures, while Desure Buie and Eli Pemberton are playing at a high level. On the other side, the Dragons mostly lean on Camren Wynter and James Butler, while their second unit could be a big issue. Both these teams struggle on the defensive end, and Hofstra should have more offensive firepower than Drexel, so give me the hosts to cover.

Prediction: Hofstra Pride -8.0 (-110)

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

I’ve mentioned that both Drexel and Hofstra’s defenses are far away from an elite level. On the other side, they are solid offensively, especially the Pride. Neither school likes to play at a slow tempo, and the Pride love to push the ball in transition when they have an opportunity. Hofstra records 69.5 possessions per 40 minutes (121st in the country), while Drexel tallies 68.0 possessions per 40 minutes (204th). The over is 3-1 in the last four encounters between Drexel and Hofstra, and it is 4-2 in their previous six meetings at Mack Sports Complex. Therefore, give me the over on the totals.

Prediction: Over 144.5 points (-110)
