The DePaul Blue Demons will host the St. John’s Red Storm in a Big East clash Saturday afternoon from the Wintrust Arena. The Red Storm were tagged with an 82-68 road loss at Marquette on Tuesday night, and the Blue Demons dropped an 83-68 home decision to Creighton in their latest bout. St. John's recorded a 74-67 home win against DePaul earlier this month.

St. John's Plummets to Last Place in Big East

The St. John’s Red Storm enter this one in last place in the entire Big East with a 1-6 record. They have not been able to find their shooting touch in conference play and rank near the bottom of DI in many offensive categories. The Red Storm have now lost three straight games. They were eight-point dogs in an 82-68 road loss to Marquette on Tuesday night.

LJ Figueroa has struggled with his accuracy in Big East play but is starting to improve, and scored 16 points on 7 for 13 shooting in Saturday’s loss to Seton Hall. The junior guard has eclipsed 20 points four times this season and is now logging 14.6 PPG on 37% shooting. Mustapha Heron has drained six three’s in his last two games. The senior guard owns a solid 38% clip from beyond the arc and he enters this one with an average of 14 PPG. Rasheem Dunn went 4 for 15 for 12 points in Tuesday’s defeat. The junior guard was playing well prior to his latest effort, and he is currently posting 11.9 PPG.

The Red Storm are positioned 79th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and are 0-4 on the road. St. John’s is averaging 75.4 points, ranking them 89th in DI. They are holding opponents to 69.2 points, placing them in 188th overall.

DePaul Falls to Creighton after Defeating Butler

The DePaul Blue Demons will be eager to return to the court. They were two-point favorites in an ugly 83-68 home loss to Creighton on Wednesday to dip to 1-5 in Big East play. DePaul was outstanding in the non-conference portion of their schedule which included a win against Texas Tech but have not looked the same in Big East action.

Watch for Paul Reed who is hot, sinking over 20 points in two straight games. The junior forward has racked up 13 double-doubles on the season, and he features an average of 16.3 PPG and 11.3 RPG. Charlier Moore is on a rough 6 for 28 stretch from the field in his last two games. The junior guard continues to earn a ton of assists and he is averaging 15.9 points and a team-leading 6.8 assists per game. Jalen Coleman-Lands is thriving from three-point range where he now features a 34.7% efficiency. The senior guard is averaging 11.6 PPG.

The Blue Demons are ranked 62nd overall in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings, and stand at 11-4 on their home floor. DePaul is averaging a solid 74.9 points on the season, ranking them 94th in DI. They are holding opponents to 68.1 points, placing them 154th in the country.

Best Bets for this Game

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

I am siding with DePaul in this one. St. John’s has lost six of their seven Big East games and they continue to struggle with their accuracy which has been their downfall. They have shot 40% or lower from the field in three out of their last four games overall. DePaul’s defense is outstanding so look for another poor offensive performance from the Red Storm in this game.

Furthermore, DePaul was able to upset #5 Butler by a 79-66 score last Saturday after falling to a good Creighton team Wednesday night. The Blue Demons are the better team offensively in this matchup. Lastly, St. John’s has lost all three Big East road games and all three defeats came by five or more points.

Prediction: DePaul Blue Demons

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

I expect this total to go under. The Blue Demons should be able to stifle St. John’s which should play a key role in the under. The Red Storm has tallied 68 or fewer points in five out of their seven conference games. The under is 6-1 in St. John’s last seven road games overall.

In addition, while I expect enough points from the Blue Demons to cover the spread, St. John's is a team that relies on their defense and they did limit DePaul to 67 points in the first meeting earlier this month in a game where the under cashed. The under is 7-2 in the Red Storm’ last nine games overall and that trend should prevail again.

Prediction: Under

Full-Game Prop Bet

Insiders Status:

The under on the St. John’s team total offered on PointsBet is a strong prop. While the Red Storm scored 74 points in the first meeting against DePaul, that game was on their home floor. They still only converted on 40% of their field goals in that contest.  Lastly, the Blue Demons have allowed an average of only 66 points in their last three home games which included holding Butler to 42% shooting.

Prediction: St. John's Team Total Under

Half-Time Total Bet

Insiders Status:

I am opting for the over on the first half total. The Blue Demons have not fared particularly well defensively in the first half where they have allowed an average of 33.7 points in the opening half in their last three games. Also, they have no issues scoring in the first half as they stand 74th overall with an average of 35.4 points in the first half.

Prediction: Over
