Hokies Defeat Tar Heels, Earn 5th ACC Victory

The Virginia Tech Hokies enter this one on a winning note. They rallied for a 79-77 double-overtime home win against a depleted Tar Heels team on Wednesday in a matchup that had the Hokies tagged as seven-point favorites. The Hokies are playing well overall, earning a win in four out of their last five games to improve their ACC record to 5-3.

Landers Nolley II has now surpassed 20 points in three out of his last four games. The freshman guard does a good portion of his damage from three-point range where he features a 38% efficiency and he is sporting an average of 18 PPG and 5.7 RPG. Nahiem Alleyne has reached double-digits in points in three straight games. The freshman guard has drained eight three’s in his last two games and he has increased his season average to 9.6 points. P.J. Horne has shot above 50% in two out of his last three tilts. The junior forward only scored six points in Wednesday’s victory and he is third in team scoring with 8.4 PPG.

The Hokies are currently positioned 57th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and feature a solid 3-1 road record. Virginia Tech is scoring an average of 72.2 points on the season, ranking them 156th overall. They are limiting opponents to only 63.1 points, good for 47th in all of DI.

Boston College Fading After Strong Start to ACC Play

The Boston College Eagles will attempt to thwart a rough five-game losing streak in this one. They started ACC play with a 3-1 record and have dipped to 3-5. The Eagles are having difficulties scoring enough points to win games in their current slide, although their defense has not been much better.

Derryck Thornton has looked good in his last few games which included 13 points in Wednesday’s loss. The senior guard has accumulated a total of 28 points in his last two games and has recorded an average of 12.8 points on 40% shooting. Jay Heath is one of many who are struggling with their shot. The freshman guard has shot below 40% in four consecutive games and his average has fallen to 12.1 PPG. Nik Popovic has not been productive, reaching double-digits in points in one out of his last three games. The senior forward is averaging 11.8 PPG on a 44% efficiency from the field accompanied by 5.5 RPG.

The Eagles are positioned 171st in DI in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball ratings and own a 6-5 home record. Boston College is only averaging 64.4 points, pegging them 322nd overall. They are allowing an average of 68.1 points, placing them 152nd in the country.

Best Bets for this Game

Full-Game Side Bet

Insiders Status:

I am confiding taking Virginia Tech in this one. Boston College is really having a difficult time in conference play recently, losing four consecutive games. They haven't been close as three of those defeats came by double-digits in points. The Eagles are slumping offensively, netting 65 or fewer points in four straight games.

Furthermore, the Hokies have collected a win in four out of their last five games and I like them in this one due to their defense. They held Syracuse to 63 points and NC State to only 58 points earlier this month and Boston College is one of the worst offensive teams in the entire ACC.

Prediction: Virginia Tech Hokies

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

Points should be at a premium in this game. The Hokies slow the game down with long possessions and while they don’t give up many points, they also don’t score many. The Hokies are mediocre when it comes to offense and they own a team field goal percentage below 44%. The under is 5-1 in the Hokies’ last six Saturday games.

In addition, the Eagles top strength is their defense and they have allowed 55 or fewer points in three out of their last four home games. The Hokies are very inconsistent offensively and I don’t see them putting up a ton of points on the road. The under is 4-1 in the Eagles’ last five home games and that trend should convert again.

Prediction: Under

Full-Game Prop Bet

Insiders Status:

The over on the Virginia Tech team total is a solid option. The Hokies are a team that relies on three-point shooting quite heavily. This is key as Boston College ranks down at 249th in the country in three-point defense, and the Hokies are outstanding from deep, sporting a 37.4% efficiency, good for 33rd in DI.

Prediction: Virginia Tech Team Total Over

Half-Time Total Bet

Insiders Status:

I am going with the over on the halftime total. The Eagles have not fared well defensively in the first half where they have conceded an average of 34 points in their last three games. Moreover, the Hokies have been similar in the first half, squandering an average of 34.3 points in their last three.

Prediction: Over
