Utah State Aggies (16-4) vs. San Diego State Aztecs (15-4)

The 2022-23 college basketball season goes on Wednesday, January 25, with the Mountain West Conference showdown from Viejas Arena in San Diego, California, so here’s the best Utah State vs. San Diego State betting pick.

The Aggies and Aztecs lock horns for the first time this term, and the tip-off is set for 11:00 PM ET. San Diego State opens as a 7-point home fave, while the totals are listed at 145.0 points.

Utah State shoots for its third straight victory

The Utah State Aggies (16-4; 11-8 ATS; 5-2 conf.) are coming off Saturday’s 75-74 home victory over San Jose State. It was their second straight win and the third in four games, but the Aggies extended their ATS losing streak to three games, failing to cover an 11.5-point spread. They rallied from a ten-point second-half deficit, tallying 45 points through the final 20 minutes.

The Aggies made 53.8% of their field goals last Saturday. They went 10-for-23 from beyond the arc and 9-for-13 from the foul line while posting a 19/12 assist-to-turnover ratio. The Aggies’ defense didn’t impress at all, and Utah State allowed a thumping 17 offensive rebounds. Junior guard Steven Ashworth notched 19 points and six assists, while fellow junior G Max Shulga accounted for 15 points, five rebounds, and three dishes.

Utah State is No. 34 in the NCAA NET Rankings and No. 47 in the KenPom rankings. The Aggies lean on their prolific offense, tallying 114.9 points per 100 possessions (18th in the country). They make 10.2 triples per game (11th) on a 42.7 percentage clip (1st). On the other side of the ball, the Aggies certainly need to improve. They allow 100.7 points per 100 possessions (109th) on 45.6% shooting from inside the arc (47th) and 37.1% from downtown (339th).

SDSU eyes its third consecutive win, too

The San Diego State Aztecs (15-4; 6-11-1 ATS; 6-1 conf.) defeated Air Force 70-60 as 9.5-point road favorites this past Saturday. SDSU posted 15 offensive rebounds and made 22 of its 23 attempts from the free-throw line to overcome a poor 38.6 field goal percentage (4-for-15 from deep). Also, the Aztecs handed out just six assists on the night.

Senior forward Keshad Johnson posted a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double against the Falcons. Matt Bradley, a 6-foot-4 senior guard, had 13 points and seven rebounds, while fellow senior G Darrion Trammell added 12 points and a couple of boards and assists. The Aztecs recorded their second straight victory and the eighth in nine games.

SDSU is No. 26 in the NCAA NET Rankings and No. 27 in the KenPom rankings. The Aztecs score 111.5 points per 100 possessions (50th in the country) on 51.1% shooting from inside the arc (170th) and 35.7% from downtown (91st). They allow 94.0 points in return (27th) on 51.2% shooting from inside the arc (272nd) and 31.1% from beyond the 3-point line (72nd).

Insiders Status:

The Aztecs defend the 3-point line well, and I think they’ll slow the Aggies down. Also, SDSU is a top-50 team in the country in both defensive rebound percentage and free-throw rate, so give me the Aztecs to win and cover. The Aggies are a very dangerous offensive team, but they lean on 3-point shooting too much while struggling to defend at a high level.

Both Utah State and SDSU have struggled against the spread lately. The Aggies are 1-4 ATS in their last five games overall, and the Aztecs are 3-5 ATS in their previous eight showings at any location. San Diego State is 9-0 ATS in its last nine home encounters with Utah State.

Prediction: San Diego State Aztecs -7.0 (-110)

Full-Game Total Pick

Insiders Status:

When it comes to the totals, a lot will depend on Utah State’s 3-point shooting. If the Aggies find a way to make triples against the Aztecs’ stout defense, the game would fly over the total. SDSU is a solid 3-point shooting team, while Utah State struggles to defend the 3-point line.

While the Aztecs tally 67.9 possessions per 40 minutes (149th in the nation), the Aggies like to push the ball in transition and rank 72nd in the country in pace (69.4 possessions per 40 minutes). The over is 5-1 in Utah State’s last six games overall, 4-1 in its last five outings on the road, and 4-2 in SDSU’s previous six contests overall.

Prediction: Go over 145.0 points (-110)
