Hornets looking for back-to-back wins

Sacramento State snapped a two-game losing skid with its win on Thursday night. The Hornets had lost games to Northern Colorado and Southern Utah heading into that contest. Prior to those losses, they had strung together wins against Idaho State, Northern Arizona, and Weber State. Sacramento State jumped out to a 20-point halftime lead against Northern Arizona when the two teams met for the first time earlier this season. The Hornets held off a furious rally in the second half to secure the win.

Senior center Joshua Patton leads Sacramento State with 14.0 points per game and 5.5 rebounds per game. He is notching a team-high in both statistical categories, along with blocking 2.4 shots per contest. Junior forward Ethan Esposito is the only other player in double figures, scoring 10.2 points per game and grabbing 5.4 rebounds per game. Junior wing Bryce Fowler is scoring 8.7 points per game and is dishing out a team-high 3.0 assists per outing. Senior guard Izayah Mauriohooho-Le’Afa is adding 8.3 points per game. He is the team’s only serious threat from beyond the arc, knocking down 25 of 79 attempts from long range.

Lumberjacks looking to continue winning streak

Northern Arizona has now rattled off three wins in a row after losing back-to-back games against Sacramento State and Idaho State. The Lumberjacks have defeated Southern Utah, Northern Colorado, and Portland State. All three victories have come in a narrow fashion, as they won by a combined 11 points. Portland State jumped out to a 45-37 halftime lead in Saturday’s game, but Northern Arizona scored five of its final seven points from the free-throw line to seal the deal in the final two minutes. Portland State missed a contested layup that would have tied the game as time expired.

The Lumberjacks are led by sophomore guard Cameron Shelton, who is scoring 13.1 points per game and is grabbing 6.6 rebounds per game. Shelton is also the team’s leading distributor, dishing out 4.0 assists per contest. Senior forward Brooks DeBisschop is scoring 10.9 points per game and is the leading rebounder with 7.7 boards per outing. Senior guard Ted McCree is also in double figures, adding 10.2 points per game. Sophomore guard Luke Avdalovic is the leading 3-point shooter, connecting on 31 of 63 attempts from beyond the arc.

Both teams have been phenomenal at covering the spread this season. However, this is going to be a very close game where the crowd plays a critical role. Northern Arizona is 8-4 ATS in its last 12 games. Sacramento State has lost its last five road games and is just 2-12 in its last 14 trips to Northern Arizona. The Lumberjacks have a few more weapons on offense and have a chance to get revenge for their loss to Sacramento State earlier this season. It’s tough to beat a similarly-matched team twice in a row, so I am looking for Northern Arizona to get the job done at home on Monday night.

Prediction: Northern Arizona -3

Full-Game Total Pick

Betting the under in Sacramento State games has been one of the best bets for sports bettors this year. The under has cashed in a ridiculous 12 of 15 games for the Hornets this season. Northern Arizona will be perfectly content with slowing the ball down in this game. Sacramento State comes in at No. 343 in KenPom’s adjusted tempo ratings, making them one of the 10 slowest teams in college basketball. Northern Arizona also plays at a snail’s pace, ranking No. 226. These teams almost always play low-scoring games, with the last eight contests between the two teams going under the total.

Prediction: Under 123.5
