NCAAB: Sunday, November 12, 2017 at 4:00pm EST
Line: SMU -20
The SMU Mustangs will target their second straight win when they host the UL Monroe Warhawks in early season action Sunday afternoon from the Moody Coliseum. The Warhawks posted an 9-24 record last season and lost 83-73 to TCU in their season opener. SMU recorded a dominant 30-5 record last season and won their season opener over UMBC by a 78-67 score on Friday night. This marks the first meeting between these two schools since 2006.
Warhawks Competitive in Season-Opening Loss to TCU
The UL Monroe Warhawks return their top two scorers from last season in Munnings and Sam McDaniel and both played well in the season-opening loss. The Warhawks were very competitive in their 93-83 road loss to a strong TCU team on Friday night. They were only down three points at half and connected on 12 of 27 shots from beyond the arc. Travis Munnings came one rebound away from a double-double, netting 13 points along with nine rebounds. Munnings had a solid sophomore season, averaging 13.2 points along with a team-leading 8.1 rebounds, and is the Warhawks best player. Senior guard Sam McDaniel was terrific in the season opener, collecting 21 points on 7 for 14 shooting, and added seven rebounds. McDaniel heads into his senior season looking to build on his 11.2 point per game clip from last year, and will look to improve on his 38% shooting. Jordan Harris registered 16 points in the season-opening loss after averaging 8.7 points last year.
UL Monroe was ranked to finish in last place in the 12-team Sun Belt Conference in the preseason poll. They only averaged 66.6 points per game last season, ranking them down at 312th in the Country. The Warhawks allowed an average of 69.7 points, placing them 110th overall.
Milton Leads Mustangs to Win in Season Opener
The SMU Mustangs overcame a poor first half in their 78-67 home win over UMBC in their season opener on Friday night. The Mustangs shot 46.8% while holding UMBC to a 42% clip. Shake Milton was outstanding, sinking 28 points, including a perfect 10 for 10 mark from the free-throw line. The Mustangs will be leaning heavily on Milton in the offensive end this season. The junior guard averaged 13 points last season and shot a terrific 42% from three-point territory. Milton was selected as the AAC Preseason Player of the Year in the preseason poll. Jarrey Foster also played well, recording 17 points on 6 for 11 shooting. The junior guard averaged a solid 9.9 points last season and should progress nicely this season. The Mustangs will not be as strong as last year’s team that saw them win the AAC conference Tournament. They lost their top two scorers and three out of their top four offensive threats.
SMU was selected to finish fourth in the 12 team AAC conference in the preseason coaches poll. They averaged 74.3 points last season, ranking them 151st overall. The Mustangs played stifling defense last year, allowing an average of only 60 points per game, good for third in the entire Country.
The UL Monroe Warhawks are:
- 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 games as a road underdog.
- 3-1-1 ATS in their last 5 road games.
The SMU Mustangs are:
- No Key Trends
I am taking the points with UL Monroe with this high spread. The Warhawks played a very strong TCU team tough in their season opener, losing by only 10 points on the road. They feature two threats in McDaniels and Munnings that are strong offensively and they combined to average 14 rebounds per game last season. The Mustangs lost their top two scorers from last season and while they should win this one and I don’t seem them taking it by big points.
