College Basketball action on Monday evening and the Old Dominion Monarchs of Conference U.S.A will grapple with the James Madison Dukes of the Colonial Athletic Conference at JMU Convocation Center in Harrisonburg, Virginia. The Monarchs are off a 57-54 home win over Hampton, while the Dukes are off an 80-50 home win over Bridgewater (VA). These teams met at ODU last year and the Monarchs won 62-55.

Monarchs Squeak By Towson Tigers

The Old Dominion Monarchs were 19-12 last year overall and 12-6 within Conference U.S.A, but they did not play in any postseason tournaments. They will look to get to one this year as they should again finish in the upper half of the conference. The Monarch play at a very slow pace and rely on their defense to win games. Last year they ranked 17th in the nation in defensive FG% at 40.0% and 5th in points allowed, giving up just 61.2 ppg. They have started out strong at that end of the court this year so far as they allowed the Towson Tigers just 54 points on just 34.5% shooting overall and 30.0 shooting from long range. Last year, against the Dukes they allowed just 65 points on 39.6% shooting overall, including just 30.0% from long range and they will be hoping for the same kind of defensive effort in this one against a decent JMU offense that put up 80 points in their opener.

The offense ranked 334th in the nation in scoring, putting up just 64.5 ppg and 315th in shooting, hitting just 41.2% of their shots. They play at one of the slowest paces in the nation, so struggling to score is nothing new for them. Against Towson, they put up 57 points on 41.4% shooting overall, including just 18.8% from long range. B.J. Stith led the team in scoring with 15 points, while last year’s leading scorer, Ahmad Caver chipped in with 10. This is again not a great offensive team, but their defense is very good and that defense should lead them to a postseason tournament somewhere this year.

Mosley Leads Dukes To Rout Of Bridgewater

Bridgewater (VA) is not a Division One team and the James Madison Dukes proved that with an 80-50 home win in their opener. The Dukes are not expected to be a strong team this year, as they have been picked for 10th in the CAA. A big reason for that is the fact that they have 11 newcomers on the team this year and it will take some time for all the new parts to gel together. They did look good in their opener against Bridgewater, but can they score well against a much better defense than the one they faced in that one? Stuckey Mosley is one of the newcomers this year after transferring from Toledo two years ago and he led the Dukes to the win over Bridgewater with 22 points. He averaged 3.3 ppg and 10.2 ppg in his two years with the Rockets. Also scoring in double figures was Joey McLean and Matt Lewis, who each had 14 points. McLean is the only veteran on the team and he will be counted on plenty for leadership this year.

Last year, they were 315th in the nation in scoring, putting up just 66.5 ppg and they hit 44.4% of their shots, which was 167th in the nation. This offense will be tested against a very good ODU offense. The Dukes hit 44.4% of their shots overall, but 25% from long range in the win over Bridgewater, but it was clearly enough, especially since the defense played so well. That defense allowed Bridgewater to hit just 29.5% of their shots overall, including just 20.0% from long range, plus they outrebounded them 53-30. Last year, they were a solid defensive team as they allowed just 69.7 ppg, which was 110th in the nation and they did so on 43.9% shooting, which was 180th in the land.

The Dukes looked good in their opener, while the Monarchs struggled in their win over Towson. The Monarchs are a very good defensive team and they play at a slow pace on offense, while the Dukes put up 80 points in their opener, but that is not the norm for them as they had one of the worst offensive teams in the nation last year and this year they have many new parts that have to gel. I cannot see the Dukes scoring a ton here and I also don’t see ODU putting up much. The Dukes were a decent defensive team last year and the Monarchs were one of the worst offensive teams, plus they play at a very slow pace. I can’t see more than 115 points scored in this one.
