The Youngstown State Penguins will venture on the road to take on the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in early season action Friday night from the Cajundome. The Penguins logged a 12-20 regular-season record last year and lost 78-55 to Louisville in their latest action. The Ragin' Cajuns went 19-13 last season and fell 98-65 to Louisville in their previous game.

Youngstown Thumped by #5 Louisville

The Youngstown State Penguins remain on the road after losing 78-55 to #5 Louisville in their previous action this past Sunday. The Penguins were huge 26 point dogs in the defeat, but to their credit, they actually out-rebounded the Cardinals. Darius Quisenberry leads the way with an average of 12.5 points on a poor 38.5% clip from the field. The sophomore guard will be one to watch as the season unfolds. He averaged 13.8 points in a very promising freshman season.

Naz Bohannon was a bright spot in the defeat to Louisville, registering 14 points and eight rebounds. The junior forward finished with an average of over eight rebounds in each of his first two seasons, and he has collected 16 rebounds in two games this year. Overall, the Penguins' rebounding has been a strength. Junior guard Jamir Thomas has accumulated 19 rebounds in two games.

Youngstown State recorded a 101-53 win against DIII Thiel College in their season opener. The Penguins were voted to finish in sixth place in the Horizon League preseason poll, although I believe they will surprise some teams. Ken Pomeroy has them placed at 216th in his ratings. The Penguins averaged 75.5 points last year, ranking them 99th overall. They conceded an average of 78.9 points, placing them 332nd overall.

Ragin' Cajuns Fall to TCU in First Defeat of Season

The Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns have won two of their first three games. They opened with an easy win against NAIA member Loyola New Orleans and beat McNeese 85-80 in their home opener. The Ragin’ Cajuns had no chance in a rough 98-65 road loss to TCU on Tuesday night in a matchup that had Louisiana as 17 point dogs.

Jalen Johnson is red-hot, scoring at least 20 points in all three games this season which included 21 points in the loss to TCU. The junior forward transferred from St. Louis and his experience is helping a team that lost several players from last year’s squad. Johnson is averaging 21.3 points and a team-leading 6.7 rebounds per game.

Cedric Russell is also viewed as a leader on this team. The junior guard averaged 9.7 points last season, and all early indicates show he should post a sizeable increase in production this year. Russell is logging an average of 17 points on a stellar 51% field goal efficiency.

The Ragin’ Cajuns were selected to finish in 5th place in the Sun Belt preseason poll, and they are placed at 269th overall in Ken Pomeroy's rankings.Louisiana is scoring an average of 81.7 points, placing them 88th overall. The Ragin' Cajuns have squandered an average of 81.7 points, pegging them down at 322nd in the country.

Rating:

I am siding with Youngstown State in this one. Youngstown State has only played two games so they have a small sample size, but they kept it close with a ranked Louisville team as they were only down seven points at the half. The Penguins return almost their entire roster and scoring points is an area they will excel.

Furthermore, the Louisiana defense is an issue. They have squandered over 80 points in two straight games which included 80 points to McNeese State. The Penguins' loss against Louisville will only help them going up against teams such as Louisiana. Also, the over is 6-2 in the Ragin’ Cajuns’ last eight non-conference games.

Prediction: Youngstown State Penguins

Full-Game Total Pick

Rating:

This contest should evolve to a high scoring tilt. Louisiana has scored at least 85 points in two of their three games, and they are hot from deep, sporting a 40% clip from three-point range. Also, the over is 6-2 in the Ragin’ Cajuns’ last eight non-conference games.

Youngstown State is all about offense. They are attempting a remarkable 67 shots per game and Darius Quisenberry and Naz Bohannon are both averaging over 12 points. The over is 6-0 in the Penguins’ last six games following a straight-up loss of more than 20 points, and it should prevail again.

Prediction: Over

Full-Game Prop Bet

Insiders Status:

Rating:

Youngstown State should pile on the points in this one and the over on their team total is a solid prop. The Penguins feature four players averaging at least nine points through two games. This team averaged 75.5 points last season, and their experience should translate to even more points this season, especially against a weaker opponent.

Prediction: Youngstown State Team Total Over

Half-Time Side Pick

Insiders Status:

Rating:

I am sticking with Youngstown State on the halftime line. The Ragin’ Cajuns have squandered an average of 42.5 points in the first half in their three games this season. Youngstown State held Louisville to 38 points which might appear to be a high number, but that was Louisville’s home opener and they are ranked fifth in the country.
