Iowa State Cyclones (0-2) vs. Appalachian State Mountaineers (2-0)
NCAA Basketball: Thursday, November 16th, 5:30 pm EST
Line: Iowa State -10.5
The Cyclones of Iowa State head to Appalachian State to take on the Mountaineers on Thursday night. Iowa State is still looking for their first win of the year, getting crushed in both of their games thus far. Appalachian State is the opposite, having won both of their first two games, including what may be the most ridiculous score in college basketball this year, as they beat a team called Toccoa Falls by a score of 135-34.
Iowa State hasn’t lost by a 101 yet, but their two losses haven’t been close either. They lost 74-59 to Missouri and then came back and lost 74-56 to the Milwaukee Panthers. I’m sensing a trend as they put up mid to high 50’s and allow 74 points. They now look to get off the snide versus an Appalachian State that has been playing very well thus far.
Cyclones lose two straight
Iowa State has lost two straight to start the season and they were both in similar fashion. They gave up 74 points in both games and lost by 15 and then 18 points. The first loss to Missouri was explainable, but losing by 18 points to the Milwaukee Panthers is a little bit harder to explain away. The Cyclones offense was pretty pathetic and was the main reason they lost.
They shot 16 of 42 from the field, an abysmal 38% and they made only three of 15 from beyond the arc. It’s hard to get wins in college basketball these days if you are only hitting three three-pointers. Only two players reached double digits, and they only managed 11 points each.
App State gets off to a roaring start
Appalachian State is 2-0 and they are outscoring opponents 230-91. That’s not a misprint. They beat Toccoa Falls 135-34 in their opening game, and I’m not sure if it’s more embarrassing for the Toccoa Falls team or for Jim Fox, the head coach of Appalachian State. He needs to call off his players at some point, and you can’t win a game by over 100 points. That’s just embarrassing.
They came back and won their next game 95-57 over the Bridgewater Eagles. I don’t know where they find these teams, but if you are just trying to get easy wins, they have found the right teams. They have been led by Ronshad Shabazz who is putting up 24.5 points per game and shooting 54.5% another pointers.
The Iowa State Cyclones are:
- 4-0 ATS in their last 4 vs. Sun Belt.
- 4-1 ATS in their last 5 neutral site games.
- 9-4 ATS in their last 13 games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.
The Appalachian State Mountaineers are:
- 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games overall.
- 1-6 ATS in their last 7 games following a straight up win.
- 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. a team with a losing straight up record.
I have a hard time believing the Cyclones are this bad. I think they come out and play their best game of the year, and get their first cover on the year as well. Let’s take the road team.
