The Puerto Rico Tip-off continues with Boise State and UTEP in the second game of the day. Neither team has taken a loss yet this season. Good news for Miners fans is this basketball team already has more wins than their football program. This will be both teams’ first meeting since 2005.
Broncos bench player scores career-high 22 points
Boise State had no problems taking down a slightly better opponent than their lower division foe in the opener. They defeated Southern Utah 90-69 thanks to Justinian Jessup registering a career-high 22 points in the win off the bench. The sophomore guard hit 8-of-12 shots including 6 3-pointers. He’s now scored 37 points so far this season and is rolling at a ridiculous 60.9 percent clip. It won’t last, but he’s been on a roll lately.
In general, the Broncos were on a roll from downtown in the victory. They hit 12-of-27 from 3-point range and shot 57.6 percent from the field overall. Ball movement was a tremendous success as they hit 16 assists on 34 field goals made. Alex Hobbs joined his bench partner and hit 9-of-13 from the field to finish with 19 points. The Boise State offense is red-hot to start the season.
UTEP blows past lower-division foe after scoring the first 32 points
UTEP doubled-up Louisiana College 100-50 in the season opener. They started off scoring the first 32 points of the game and obviously never looked back. The astonishing numbers included hitting 57.8 percent from the field and controlling the glass with a 50-31 rebounding advantage. They had 22 assists on 37 field goals made and they also registered seven blocks and six steals. As expected, the lower-division opponent was no match, but they did end up hitting 10 3-pointers.
Four starters scored 12 or more points as the offense was evenly distributed. Junior forward Paul Thomas had the best overall game among them with 16 points and 8 assists. He only missed one of his seven shot attempts from the field and went 4-for-5 from the free throw line. Keith Frazier was a bit hit-and-miss as he neared a double-double of 13 points and 9 rebounds, but had a negative ratio of four assists to six turnovers.

Trends are going toward the Miners in this one, but go with the favorites. UTEP allowing a lot of 3-pointers in the opener could be a warning sign for this matchup.
