Towson takes on Pepperdine in the first round of the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase. Both teams are 1-1 and have both defeated non-Division teams as their only victories.
Tigers recover from loss to Virginia
Towson faced No. 5 Virginia in their opener on Nov. 6 and fell, 73-42 on the road. That was understandable considering UVa had lost to another Baltimore-area school in March Madness, when they were shocked by No. 16 UMBC. Towson struggled offensively, as most teams do against the Cavs. They also were playing without leading returning scorer Jordan McNeill, who averaged 4.8ppg. He was out with a finger injury but could return for this tournament.
The Tigers rebounded with a 93-66 home win over Division III Wesley College this past Sunday. Backup small forward Quinton Drayton led the team with 21 points, while Duquesne transfer Nakye Sanders added 12 points and six rebounds. This is an extremely young team with just one starter returning from an 18-14 team. Their leading scorer Zane Martin (19.8ppg) transferred to New Mexico. Juco point guard Tobias Howard (10.5ppg) and juco wing Brian Fobbs (9ppg, 4.5rpg) will have to replace that scoring along with Sanders and McNeill.
Pepperdine could be 2-1 or 1-2 but…
The Waves are coming off a 6-26 season and they were just 2-16 in the West Coast Conference last season. One thing they couldn’t prepare for was the fires in Malibu. The campus has been closed until Nov. 26 (when they play Idaho State) so they had a game against Cal State Northridge on Nov. 10 that was postponed due to the fires.

Their only win thus far came against Division II Cal State Dominguez Hills, 100-66 on Nov. 7. On Nov. 13, they returned to action against Northern Colorado, and fell, 88-80 on the road. Kameron Edwards led Pepperdine with 22 points and nine rebounds. Edwards (6-6, 230) averaged 14.7ppg and 6.4rpg last year. Sophomore point guard Colbey Ross (14ppg, 5.6apg last year) added 14 points on 4-of-10 shooting.
- 7-0 ATS last 7 overall.
- 4-0 ATS last 4 after a SU win.
- 0-4 ATS last 4 non-conference games.
- 1-10 ATS last 11 overall.
The Bottom Line What to bet on this game.
Full-Game Side Bet
You have to call this one for the more experienced team and that’s Pepperdine. No matter who plays for Towson, they are a work-in-progress with so many new pieces. But when you play a top-5 team and then a D3 team, it’s tough to judge. In that case, go with the Waves, a team playing for an entire area.
Full-Game Total Pick
Towson lost almost their entire team, so production might be tough this season, especially early on. Pepperdine did give up 88 points in their last game and that’s not a great sign but they get a break when playing the Tigers, who are 0-4 Under their last 4 in neutral site games. Pepperdine is 8-2 Under their last 10 after an ATS win.
