The Wisconsin Badgers will collide with the Marquette Golden Eagles in an inter-conference state rivalry showdown Sunday afternoon from the Kohl Center in Madison, WI. The Golden Eagles logged a 24-10 record last season, and posted a 65-55 home win gains Purdue in their latest action. The Badgers finished last year with a 23-11 record and crushed McNeese 83-63 in their previous contest. Marquette came away with a 74-69 home win against Wisconsin last season.
Marquette Defeats Purdue to Improve to 2-0
The Marquette Golden Eagles are once again a strong team. They opened the season with an easy 88-53 home win against Loyola Maryland and had a much tougher opponent in their second game which resulted in a 65-55 home win against Purdue. The Golden Eagles offense is led by the dominating Markus Howard. The senior guard is a great talent who won Big East Player of the Year. Howard averaged a remarkable 25 points on a 40% clip from three-point range, and he has scored a combined 57 points on 53% shooting in two games this season.
The Golden Eagles brought in Koby McEwen on a transfer from Utah State. The junior averaged a tremendous 15.6 points in the 2017-2018 season before sitting out last season. McEwen has scored 34 points in two games. Also back is defensive stud Theo John. The 6-foot-9 junior forward averaged 2.1 blocks per game last year, and he has made a remarkable nine blocks in two games this season. John has scored 13 points with 17 rebounds this season.
The Golden Eagles are not ranked in the AP Top 25 and interestingly are placed 12th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball rankings. They were projected to finish in 4th place in the tough Big East in the preseason poll. Marquette averaged 77.3 points last season, ranking them 63rd overall. They allowed an average of 69.5 points, placing them 123rd overall.
Wisconsin Posts Strong Start Including Win vs. St. Mary's
The Wisconsin Badgers will seek their third consecutive win in this intriguing matchup. The Badgers opened the season with a narrow 65-63 overtime home loss to #20 Saint Mary’s and rebounded with a win against Eastern Michigan and an 83-63 home win against McNeese in their latest game. Brad Davison is locked in, sinking 59% of his field goals for an average of 16 points. The junior guard scored 24 points in Wednesday’s win after averaging 10.5 points last year. Nate Reuvers has already seen an increase in his playing time this season and he has responded, posting 15.3 PPG and 8 RPG on the season. The 6-foot- junior forward has one double-double.
Wisconson returns three of their top four scorers from last season which includes D’Mitrik Trice and Kobe King who is questionable for this one with a leg injury. King has scored a combined 24 points in two games
The Badgers are currently ranked at 50th in the country in Ken Pomeroy’s college basketball rankings, and they were selected to finish 6th in the Big Ten in the preseason poll. Wisconsin is averaging 70.3 points through three games, placing them 228th in the country. The Badgers are a strong defensive team, and they are limiting opponents to 60 points, good for 74th in all of D1.
