Long Beach State 49ers

Oregon State Beavers

Long Beach State 49ers (2-0, 1-0 away) vs. Oregon State Beavers (1-1, 1-1 home)

NCAA Basketball:  Saturday, November 18th, 11:00 pm EST

The 49ers of Long Beach State head to Oregon State to take on the Beavers on Saturday night. The 49ers have proved that they have San Francisco’s number, opening the season with wins over the University of San Francisco 83-71 and then following that up with a 95-70 win over San Francisco State.  They will now head to a Pac 12 team and may not find the footing quite as easy.

The Beavers have started the season with a win followed by a loss.  They won their opener, beating the Southern Utah Thunderbirds 99-82, a game in which they should win.  They followed that with a game they also probably should have won, but Wyoming came in and beat the Beavers 75-66 on Monday night.  This is another game they should win, but the 49ers have played well to start the year.

Long Beach starts 2-0

Maybe the University of San Francisco and San Francisco State aren’t household names, but Long Beach State handled both pretty easily and have looked impressive in starting 2-0.  They were 15 point underdogs to start the year against the Dons and went and won by 12 points.  That’s impressive.  They then backed that up by easily defeating the lesser San Francisco State team.

The 49ers best player has been Barry Ogalue.  He lead the 49ers in scoring at 17.5 points per game.  He also puts up six assists and two boards per game.   Most impressively, he is shooting over 61% from the field.  The 49ers are a balanced team as nine players average 5.5 points or more.

Oregon State falls to Wyoming

The Beavers opened up the season with a ho-hum win over Southern Utah, but then wilted from the pressure of stepping up in competition, as the Wyoming Cowboys came into Corvallis and beat the Beavers 75-66.  Wyoming led by four at half and slowly pulled away in the second half and were the rightful winner.  Hayden Dalton led the Cowboys finishing with 22 points and nine boards, all while hitting four three-pointers.

Oregon State was led by Tres Tinkle who had a solid game and put up 20 points on eight of 17 shooting.  Drew Eubanks pitched in with 17 points on six of nine shooting.  These two played well, but the problem is that no other Beaver scored in double digits.  The team missed 16 out of 20 three pointers and missed nine out of 23 free throws.  They have to shoot better on Saturday if they want to escape with a win.

The Long Beach State 49ers are:

  • 10-4 ATS in their last 14 Saturday games.
  • 11-4 ATS in their last 15 games after scoring more than 90 points in their previous game.
  • 4-0 ATS in their last 4 games overall.

The Oregon State Beavers are:

  • 3-11 ATS in their last 14 non-conference games.
  • 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games overall.

Sure, the 49ers are coming from the lousy, to be kind, Big West Conference and the Beavers are from the big, bad Pac 12, but I just think the 49ers are the better team.  They have been impressive in their two wins and I think they get another on Saturday night.

Pick: Long Beach State
